International community’s silence on Azerbaijani saboteurs’ trial
means consent – Larisa Alaverdyan

The international community is almost silent on the trial of two
members of an Azerbaijani raiding party in Stepanakert,
Nagorno-Karabakh.

This silence should be viewed as consent to the ongoing process in
Nagorno-Karabakh, Larisa Alaverdyan, Executive Director, Foundation
Against the Violation of Law (FAVL), told Tert.am.

“When Azerbaijan applied to the International Committee of the Red
Cross (ICRC) for POW status to the Azerbaijani saboteurs, the ICRC
stated that the persons had crossed the borders and the ICRC is only
supposed to inquire about their health,” Ms Alaverdyan said.

The Armenian side has invited different international organizations to
monitor the trial and visit the accused.

With respect to Azerbaijan’s claims that Nagorno-Karabakh is an
“occupied territory,” and has no right to hold such a trial, Ms
Alaverdyan said:

“That is, they ignore the fact that the Minsk Group confirmed long ago
that Azerbaijan cannot claim sovereignty over the territory. The
Madrid principles indicate that irrespective of whether they agree
with them or they do not.”

By considering Nagorno-Karabakh an occupied territory Azerbaijan does
not resolve the problem.

“Azerbaijan’s aim is to prove that the persons in question were in the
territory that belongs to their country, which is absurd,” Ms
Alaverdyan said.
