Azerbaijani religious figure arrested over protest against
Iran-Armenia relations released

Baku. Real Jafarli – APA. The famous Azerbaijani religious figure
arrested over the protest against the expansion of Iran-Armenia
relations has been released.

APA reports quoting Oyannews agency that Hojjat al-Islam Abdulaziz
Azimi Gadim was released from the central prison in Tabriz on January
29 as term of his sentence expired.

Gadim was arrested during the protest against the relations between
Iran’s Eastern Azerbaijan Province and Armenia in Maragheh, Iran on
December 27, 2012. For some time the Azerbaijani activist was held at
a unit of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and National Security in
Tabriz. On February 10, 2013 he was sent to Tabriz prison and released
advance on pawn on March 24.

The hearing on Gadim’s case took place at Tabriz Supreme Religious
Court on July 1. The Azerbaijani activist faced charges under
anti-government campaign and participation in unauthorized
demonstrations. The hearing was held behind closed doors. Gadim was
not provided with a lawyer. He was sentenced to 7 months and one day
in prison. On September 18, 2013, Gadim was sentenced to the central
prison in Tabriz to serve his sentence.

He was also arrested earlier. In 2005-2006, the Amnesty International
issued three statements on him.
