Fathers Christmas in Armenia to call on citizens to unite and fight
for their rights and justice

The civil initiative “Against forceful pension payments” goes on
informing the community about the obligatory accumulative pension
system that will start functioning since 1 January 2014.

On 14 December, at 2:30 PM a group of Fathers Christmas will start the
march at Yerevan streets. They will inform citizens about breaking of
their constitutional rights that will start in 2014, and about
decrease of their salary. They will also call on citizens to unite and
fight for their rights and justice, as well as join the protest action
to be held on 17 December.

The bill, effective from January 1, will require Armenians under the
age of 40 to pay more social security taxes. The unpopular measure
stems from Armenia’s transition to a new system whereby the amount of
pensions will depend on workers’ lifelong contributions to pension
funds.

Hundreds of people have demonstrated against it in recent weeks.
Armenia’s leading opposition groups have backed their demands, saying
that the reform is unfair as it will cut the real incomes of scores of
people. They plan to ask the Constitutional Court to declare it
unconstitutional.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
