Higher gas prices to cause surge on brandy market – Armenian busines

Higher gas prices to cause surge on brandy market – Armenian businessman

14:55 – 29.09.13

Several Armenian brandy manufacturers have raised their prices
pleading the recent hike in the natural gas tariffs, Alexan Petrosyan,
the owner of the MAP company and a Republican Party of Armenia (RPA)
parliamentary group member, told Tert.am.

`The Yerevan Brandy Company has raised its price 5% because of the gas
price rise. I think many other companies will follow suit because wine
production is gas-consuming. The grapes price has been raised as well.
Last year we purchased grapes at AMD 140, while this year’s price is
AMD 145 per kilogram,’ Petrosyan said.

Although the MAP company has not yet raised its prices, it will
certainly do so in the future. `The Yerevan Brandy Company is waiting
for a decision from France. But in our company it is our own decision.
However, raising the price is not an optimal decision now,’ he said.

Armenia exports 90% of its cognac to Russia, and the country’s
accession to the Customs Union will have a favorable impact on the
brandy market.

`People earning their bread will benefit from Armenia’s accession to
the Customs Union because Russia has been our major market for the
past 100 years. And reorientation to European markets or to any other
markets is rather difficult for us,’ he said.

As regards local market development by means of the European market,
Petrosyan said: `Do you think our products meet the Russian market’s
demands? We should think of what we can export rather than of the
markets we can export to. At present, we have no products that would
enable us to struggle for markets. Our largest profits are from ore
and cognac. And we largely export our cognac to the Russian market. So
if Russia does not allow us to export our products to its market, we
need 100 years to enter European or any other markets,’ Petrosyan
said.

A French company is the owner of the Yerevan Brandy Company, but 99%
of Armenian cognac is exported to Russia, and Armenia cannot export
even the rest 1% to France.

Entering new markets requires huge funds. `We cannot say `Wait for 50
years and let us see the developments on the European market.’ Our
products are well known in Russia alone.’

Marxist hails Armenia’s accession to Customs Union

Marxist hails Armenia’s accession to Customs Union

13:53 – 29.09.13

Chairman of the Marxist party of Armenia David Hakobyan believes that
Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union is the country’s greatest
victory `after 22 years of wandering and economic experiments.’

`It was a victory of the new alliance because some Armenian political
figures think that such phrases as `customs or economic area’ mean
trade or economy. But we are actually moving toward a new evolutionary
alliance with Russia’s hegemony, which is our country’s greatest
achievement during these years,’ Hakobyan told Tert.am.

`This new alliance will bring at least 50- 100-year-long peace to
world politics, because this new alliance is the only counterbalance
to pan-American hegemony, which poses a threat to world politics,’ he
said.

With respect to the opinion that by joining the Customs Union Armenia
yields part of its sovereignty, Hakobyan is sure that acceding to the
Customs Union does not pose any threat to Armenia’s sovereignty.

`I was the first of the severest critics of our president and
government to hail this final victory of pro-Russian orientation. We
must be proud of being part of this union,’ Hakobyan said.

Joining the Customs Union means prosperity for Armenian civilization.
The claims that joining the Customs Union is against Armenia’s
national interests are erroneous, he said.

Armenian ex-premier’s statement `barefaced lie’ – Arshak Sadoyan

Armenian ex-premier’s statement `barefaced lie’ – Arshak Sadoyan

10:42 – 29.09.13

Chairman of the National Democratic Union (NBU) Arshak Sadoyan regards
as `a barefaced lie’ the Armenian ex-premier Hrant Bagratyan’s
statement that there was no `black oil’ criminal case.

`I applied to the prosecutor’s office in connection with the `black
oil’ case. They initiated criminal proceedings and even thanked me
officially. And the prosecutor’s office got the $3.5m damages
compensated for,’ Sadoyan told Tert.am.

As to who was held responsible for causing the $3.5m damage to the
state budget, Sadoyan said: `Many people were charged. I stated then
that we charged small fry while we were speaking of the `sharks.’ I
said that 205,000 tons of black oil had never entered Armenia, but had
been devoured by officials together with Russia. Even [the then
premier of Armenia] Vazgen Sargsyan said to me `You know seven songs,
and all the seven are about black oil’.’ At that time, Vazgen Sargsyan
advised him to apply to the prosecutor’s office.

The Prosecutor General’s Office in Armenia did not provide any
official information to Tert.am. However, Tert.am found a record on a
`black oil’ commission that worked in Armenia’s Parliament during
1992-1999. Commission Chairman David Lokyan addressed the import of
black oil and reported some problems in getting the documents from
Armenia’s Ministry of Finance, Armcontract Company, Central Bank of
Armenia and Hayastan Fund.

Meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani FMs may be effective under certain
conditions – expert

September 29, 2013 | 23:16

YEREVAN. – Resolution of the Karabakh conflict is a long process. It
requires reaching agreement on the issues that the parties can solve
at the moment, political analyst told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Sergey Minasyan, deputy director of the Caucasus Institute, said such
issues are reducing tension at the line of contact, or abandoning the
warlike rhetoric.

OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Igor Popov (Russia), Jacques Faure (France)
and James Warlick (USA), and Andrzej Kasprzyk, Personal Representative
of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office met with Armenian and Azerbaijani FMs
on Friday.

The Co-Chairs stressed the commitment of their three countries to
support the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based
on the non-use of force or the threat of force, territorial integrity,
and equal rights and self-determination of peoples.

`If it is possible to persuade Azerbaijani side, which disagrees to
make any effort because Baku believes that by doing so it will lose
the last lever of influence on the negotiation process, then we can
say that there may be some movement. If not, then the meeting was,
unfortunately, a formal meeting, which, however, in this format allows
preventing the so-called big war,’ Minasyan said.

Armenia’s joining Customs Union not to affect Karabakh issue

Armenia’s joining Customs Union not to affect Karabakh issue – expert

September 29, 2013 | 22:42

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s intention to join the Customs Union will not
affect settlement of Karabakh conflict, deputy director of Caucasus
Institute Sergey Minasyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

He noted that Russia would feel more obliged in terms of so-called
security guarantees granted to Armenia and in fact through Armenia to
Nagorno-Karabakh.

`This will further help reduce likelihood of hostilities by
Azerbaijan,’ he said.

Following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between
Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin,
Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union
and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic
Union.
