Javakhk-Armenians Disappointed With New Georgian Leaders

JAVAKHK-ARMENIANS DISAPPOINTED WITH NEW GEORGIAN LEADERS

15:52 02.08.13

The Armenians of Javakhk have all the reasons to be disappointed with
the Georgian authorities as their expectations for positive reforms
have not been realized yet, says an analyst.

“The [authorities] in Georgia are trying to create a democratic state
today, but our community is not yet united. There are supporters
of the Georgian Dream [coalition], but the ruling forces won’t let
the authorities fulfill their promise,” John Melikyan, an expert on
Georgian affairs, told a news conference on Friday.

Speaking of the upcoming presidential elections in Georgia, the expert
said there are now 23 potential candidates, with the favorites being
Georgian Dream members.

“Georgia is facing an economic decline today. The opposition United
National Movement claims all this is linked to the elections,”
he added.

Melikyan noted that the Georgian opposition accuses the prime minister
today, who is trying to quit office without solving a problem. “I
mean Bidzina Ivanishvili’s promise to quit but it may cause a force
majeure situation, making Ivanishvili remain in office,” he said.

The expert added that the Armenians’ inactiveness in the country’s
political life is not absolutely to their advantage. “There is an
Azerbaijani candidate running for election, but no Armenian has
been nominated,” he said, noting that the Armenian community members
concentrate more on economic problems.

“Yes, it is very good that corruption has been done away with, but
with an empty pocket, you do not much care about that,” he said.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
