An action of protest against the rise in the public transport fare
in Yerevan is being held in front of the Government building.

The action has been organized by the Let’s Pay 100 AMD movement and
the Nikol Aghbalyan Students Union of the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation Dashnaktsutyun.

The protesters read out an address to the Government, which said that
they would not accept the new fare even if the Government decided
to subsidize it for the poor. They also want to meet with government
officials to make their claims known to them.

ArmInfo’s correspondent reports from the scene that some old woman is
trying to prevent the action. Reportedly sponsored by some members of
the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, she began chanting “200! 200!”

in response to the protesters’ call to pay 100 AMD for public
transport services.

To remind, on Wednesday evening Mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan
asked the Government to meet the next day to discuss “a confidential
issue,” this implying that the discussion will be held behind the
closed doors. For many days already people in Yerevan have been
protesting against the municipal authorities’ decision to raise the
public transport fare from 100 AMD to 150 AMD. Some car owners are
carrying people free of charge. Activists Gor and Avetik have even
hired a bus for this purpose.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
