NGO REP SPEAKS OF TRANSPORT PROBLEMS IN ARMENIA

The Yerevan Municipality has raised fares by 50%, up to AMD 150, but
if the fare rise implies a higher quality of service, Gevorg Dosturyan,
Chairman of the Civil Stand NGO, told journalists on Thursday.

He pointed out a number of problems.

“Fixed-run taxis pick up passengers between stops. As to taxis,
illegal taxis constitute a high percentage. The workday must last
eight hours for both,” Dosturyan said.

“Poor drivers have to meet the plan and earn some extra money for
themselves. Their formal wages are indicated in the documents. But
their monthly wages must officially be 150,000 drams, and they will
not seek extra passengers,” he said.

Technical checkup, medical examination and seat belts are mere
formalities as well, Dosturyan said.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
