Armenia to mark World Day to Combat Desertification

June 15, 2013 | 16:38

YEREVAN. – The World Day to Combat Desertification will be observed on
June 17, including in Armenia, and this year’s theme is drought and
scarcity of water.

Projections indicate that in the year 2025, two-thirds of mankind will
face problems of water scarcity, Armenia’s Nature Protection Ministry
press service informs.

This year’s slogan is: `Don’t let our future dry up!’

Being situated in an arid region, Armenia likewise is affected by
desertification, and it suffers a great damage from the scarcity of
water resources.

One of the key issues, in connection with the protection of the water
resources of Armenia and the effective use of these resources, is the
protection of Lake Sevan, which will be the main source of drinking
water in the future.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
