RPA OPTS OUT OF STAGING CLOSING ELECTION RALLY IN LIBERTY SQUARE

POLITICS | 03.05.13 | 12:38

A rally of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) originally
planned to be held in Yerevan’s Liberty Square on late Friday afternoon
as an event closing the four-week campaign in the city elections
will not take place, reports RFE/RL’s Armenian Service quoting an
RPA official.

Shushan Sardaryan, a spokesperson for the RPA election headquarters,
explained that the party’s top candidate, incumbent mayor Taron
Margaryan has a busy schedule for today that includes five meetings
in different districts of Yerevan. Therefore, she said, holding a
rally was not “expedient”.

All major participants in the May 5 elections, including the
opposition Armenian National Congress party, the Hello Yerevan
bloc, the Prosperous Armenia Party, have already staged their final
rallies earlier this week. The Armenian Revolutionary Federation
(Dashnaktsutyun) is planning to hold its closing event later today.

Saturday is officially declared a ‘day of silence’ before the vote.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
