Kerry, Mammadyarov have phone talk

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister
Elmar Mammadyarov have had a phone conversation, the APA News Agency
reports, citing diplomatic sources.

The two officials are said to have discussed mutual issues, including
the National Democratic Institute’s (NDI) future activities in
Azerbaijan and the status of the OSCE office in Baku.

The Azerbaijani news website Haqqin.az said in a recent report that
the Head of the NDI office in Baku, Alex Grigoriev, is preparing
colored revolution scenario in the country. An earlier report that he
had withdrawn $2 million from his personal bank account, without
giving any explanation had served as grounds for the article. Days
later, the head of the Azerbaijani presidential administration said
they were checking the report’s reliability, adding that the
organization would be suspended should the information prove true

Earlier this month, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry was reported to
have offered the OSCE office in Baku to reduce the organization’s
status to that of a project coordinator. But the Azerbaijani
Contact.az said later that the move would hamper the OSCE/ODIHR
election observation mission’s activities in the country ahead of the
upcoming presidential elections (slated for October 2013).
