LEADER OF AZERBAIJANI PRO-GOVERNMENT PARTY CALLS TO RESTRICT FACEBOOK, WHICH “THREATENS THE STATEHOOD”

The leader of the pro-government party of Azerbaijan “Fatherland”,
MP Fazail Agamali called for restrictions in Facebook and other social
networks in Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani news agency “Turan” says.
“These networks threaten the statehood of Azerbaijan,” he stated.
In particular, he said, the restrictions should refer to the appeals
unconstitutional and aimed at the opposing the society. Agamali
believes that social networks can cause appeals against the statehood
of Azerbaijan and its political stability. Agamaly brought the example
of Sunday protest against the losses in the Azerbaijani army.
“These evil plans are controlled through Facebook by various foreign
centers, and it is necessary to investigate and expose them,” said
the deputy.
He reminded that there was a revolution in Egypt which was organized
through social networks, and “Azerbaijan should not become Egypt.”
On the site “Haqqin.az” Fatullayev’s article “2 million dollars to
“Facebook” revolution in Azerbaijan,” was published which states
that the representation of U.S. National Democratic Institute (NDI)
that existed in Baku, Azerbaijan provided about 2 million dollars
for the implementation of Facebook revolution.
As “Turan” reports, the U.S. embassy denied the accusations made
against the NDI. “The charges in this article are unfounded,” the U.S.
Embassy statement said.
On March 10, in Baku, a mass protest against the deaths of soldiers in
the army in non-combat situation was held. The rally was dispersed by
the police; at least 60 people were detained. There were about 3000
protesters at Fountain Square. The number of participants increased
due to the relatives of the recruits killed in the Azerbaijani army.
Earlier, a similar protest was held on January 12 in 2013 and was
also dispersed by the police. Both protests were organized in social
networks.
