10:41, 12 March, 2013

YEREVAN, MARCH 12, ARMENPRESS: National Library of Armenia digitalizes
its entire fund. The process is very complicated and comprehensive.

More than 550 books have been digitalized up to now started from 2011.

Nune Samvelyan, Head of the Department of Automation of Library
Functions and Electronic Information Service Of National Library of
Armenia told Armenpress, “6.5 million volume fund still remain, (some
copies of the same book, magazines, maps and etc.) the digitalization
of which demands long work to be conducted.” Samvelyan highly evaluates
the fact the process is ongoing according to correct principle. The
head of eth department does not fear the number of readers may
decrease; the contact with the book is quite another pleasure. Great
number of people prefer digitalized version of the books, there are
numerous positive recalls, especially from abroad.

“More than 300 books are being digitalized within a year. 20 minutes
is needed for digitalizing one page. The preference has been given
to the Armenian early printed books, dating back to 1512-1800.

Digitalized version helps the reader to make use of the books more
quickly and any time of the time. The databases in the internet is
free and each reader can easily download any book,” Samvelyan stated.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
