Famous film director Sergey Parajanov would turn 89 today. He was born
and raised in Tbilisi. Even twenty years after his death, people from
different countries of the world visit Parajanov’s house.

The house at 10, Kote Meskhe Street in central Tbilisi is known to
many. People from all over the world come here to shoot a film about
Parajanov and to see where the great director lived. All visitors meet
Parajanov’s neighbor Zurab, who has many interesting stories to tell.

Zurab remembers that Parajanov used to turn their small yard into
a stage. “Once Vysotsky was playing and the gypsies were dancing,”
he recalls.

Parajanov’s compatriot, phonographer Yuri Mechitov is also a frequent
visitor to this house. “No one knows Parajanov well. He was an unusual
man and this was his talent,” he says.

The influential “Le Figaro” daily calls Parajanov a “super talent,”
considering him the most gifted director of our times. His name is
included in the top 100 of the best directors of all times.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
