Armenian Issue Is No Longer Taboo In Turkey After Armenia Became Ind

ARMENIAN ISSUE IS NO LONGER TABOO IN TURKEY AFTER ARMENIA BECAME INDEPENDENT: ARA GOCHUNIAN

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 12, Armenpress: The readiness to listen to
alternative views keeps growing among Turkish society. Reportedly the
society not always shares these points of views. Istanbul Zhamanak
daily newspaper editor-in chief Ara Gochunian stated in the briefing
with Armenpress, currently Turkish intellectuals more frequently
dwell on Armenian Genocide, crimes committed in 1915.

“Surely it is a general process, and there is a progress registered ,
yet it should not be conditioned by particular events” the interlocutor
stated. In the words of Gochunian Armenian issue stopped to be
considered taboo in Turkey after Armenia became independent. The
perceptions over Armenian issue undergone changes after Armenia
declared its independence, however when considered in a long term
period, there is a progress. Zhamanak editor in- chief highlighted the
importance of local mass media in shaping public opinion. According
to him alternative viewpoints are formed especially thanks to them.

Turkish publications on Armenian Genocide are increasing in Turkey
especially in recent times, including the ones published by Turkey.

Turkish intellectuals are raising the issue about the crime perpetrated
by Young Turks Government more frequently.Reportedly the fact Cemal
Pasha “1915. Armenian Genocide” book became bestseller in Turkey is
an evidence of this.
