Safarov’s pardoning complies with Azerbaijani constitution – President Aliyev

BAKU September 7

The pardoning of Azerbaijani officer Ramil Safarov complied with the
national constitution, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said after
negotiations with Azerbaijani Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen
in Baku on Friday.

“Ramil Safarov was extradited in compliance with the European
convention, and his pardon complied with the constitution of
Azerbaijan. The case is clear from the political point of view. Those
who claim that Azerbaijan has breached the convention either disregard
the reality or want to mislead the public,” he said. “Armenia should
not use this case for damaging the Karabakh settlement negotiations.
Azerbaijan wants a peaceful solution of that conflict.”

Senior Lieutenant Safarov killed Armenian serviceman Gurgen Markarian
when both were studying at NATO courses in Budapest in 2004 allegedly
for defiling the Azerbaijani flag. A Budapest court sentenced him to
life in jail in April 2006. Late last week Safarov was extradited from
Hungary and pardoned by the Azerbaijani president.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
