RUSSIA, ARMENIA CONCERNED ABOUT POSSIBLE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SAFAROV CASE

Russia and Armenia are concerned about possible negative consequences
of the Ramil Safarov case, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday,
September 3, after a meeting between First Deputy Foreign Minister
Andrei Denisov and Armenian Ambassador in Moscow Oleg Yesayan.

The meeting had been initiated by the Armenian diplomat.

Denisov and Yesayan discussed the situation created by the Azerbaijani
and Hungarian authorities with regard to Azerbaijani army serviceman
Ramil Safarov.

They “expressed serious concern in connection with possible negative
consequences of its development for stability and security in the
region,” the ministry said.

Safarov, an Azerbaijani army officer who had been serving a life
sentence in Hungary for the brutal 2004 murder of an Armenian officer
in Budapest, was transferred from Hungary to Azerbaijan on August
31 on the basis of an Azerbaijani request under the Convention of
Strasbourg on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons of March 21, 1983,
to serve the rest of his sentence.

On August 31, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made the decision
to pardon Safarov.
