CROWD URGES POLICE NOT TO HUSH UP HARSNAQAR CASE (VIDEOS)

The civil group calling for a fair prosecution against the perpetrators
of the Harsnaqar deadly clash protested outside the Armenian Police on
Thursday, urging it to disclose the copies of the case to the lawyer
of Vahe Avetyan, the military doctor killed in the incident.

The protesters claimed that the police failure not to submit the
documents is inconsistent with an earlier promise to do everything
possible to ensure a fair proceeding.

The gathering had brought together different political and civil
groups, including young activists of the opposition Armenian National
Congress, representatives of the Heritage party, members of the
Sardarapat Movement, rights activists and others.

Avetyan, who headed the ENT Department of the Yerevan Garrison
Hospital, was beaten up together with two other colleagues on the
premises of Harsnaqar on June 17. He was hospitalized in a critical
condition and died twelve days later, without coming to consciousness.

One of the protesters, Zaruhi Hovhannisyan, said replacing the charges
against the culprits to characterize the merciless act as a negligent
murder is but ridiculous.

She said the move is part of the efforts to cover up the case

“We wish to remind the police to prevent [any attempts] to cover
up such a high-profile case that has created a demand for justice,”
she said, warning that the group will closely follow the proceeding.

An investigator in charge for the case met the crowd outside,
asking them to create a group of activists for discussing the matter
upstairs. But the group declined the proposal.

David Sanasaryan of the opposition Heritage party said it would
be enough for the police to act in an open manner, involving the
attorneys in the proceeding.

The legal successor of the aggrieved, Tigran Yegoryan and Lusine
Hakobyan, later joined the protest. The latter told reporters that
they have so far had not access to the documents and materials
relating case.

“It was only yesterday that we got a notice for getting familiarized
with our cases,” she said.”Instead of minding their own business,
the police are busy with issuing statements.”

A chief of the Police Inspectorate General of Criminal Investigation,
Arsen Ayvazyan, also talked to journalists, noting that they had sent
the notices on July 27.

The attorneys finally went upstairs to get familiarized with the
case materials.
