AZERBAIJAN SLAMS POSSIBLE SETTLEMENT OF ARMENIAN REFUGEES FROM SYRIA IN KARABAKH

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has said the possible settlement
of Armenian refugees from Syria in breakaway Nagornyy Karabakh is
“provocation”, Baku-based pro-government Lider TV channel reported
on 24 July.

“This is pure provocation. This is a flagrant violation of the
international law. This illegal settlement is being carried out as
a continuation of destruction of Azerbaijani people’s cultural and
historical heritage,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Elman Abdullayev
told Lider TV.

The channel said that the Armenian government was discussing
the possibility of settling Armenian refugees from Syria in
Armenia-controlled Azerbaijani territories. The channel said Armenia
was continuing “to artificially change the demographic situation in
Azerbaijan’s occupied territories”. It recalled that ethnic Armenians
from Syria and Lebanon were settled in Azerbaijan’s Lacin District
in mid-1990s.

On 23 July, Armenian Tert.am news website quoted political analyst
Sergey Minasyan as saying that Syrian Armenians might be settled in
Nagornyy Karabakh, adding that by settling in Karabakh, they would
make investment there.

Armenian Mediamax news agency reported on 23 July that Armenia
was taking steps to resolve visa and citizenship issues of Syrian
Armenians. ArmeniaNow.com reported that the Hayazn Union picketed
the government building in Yerevan on 19 July demanding that the
authorities ensure “proper repatriation” of Syrian Armenians.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
