YEREVAN.- Narcotics are brought to Armenia mainly from Iran, Turkey,
France and Russia, police representatives told reporters on Tuesday.

Serob Harutunyan, head of department on fight against organized
crime at Armenia’s police, said opium is brought from Iran, heroine –
from Iran and Turkey, while amphetamine and metadoxil – from Russia
and France.

In his turn Grigor Malentsyan, head of the South Caucasus Borders
Complex Management Program, said opium dugs are grown in Afghanistan
and Myanmar and are transported by sea, while synthetic drugs are
manufactured in any country, even in Armenia.

Harutunyan said a group engaged in producing synthetic drugs was
discovered in Armenia several years ago.

“Police found sixty kilos of amphetamine,” he said adding that
the number of those using cannabis increased as well, reaching 697
last year.

The 26th of June is marked as International Day Against Drug Abuse
and Illicit Trafficking.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
