Ovik Abraamian has been elected the new chairman of the Armenian
National Assembly in a secret ballot on Thursday.

Taking part in the election were 110 parliamentarians, and 102 of
them voted for Abraamian’s candidacy. Four other parliamentarians
voted against it and four ballots were found invalid.

Abraamian’s candidacy was the only one and was proposed at a Wednesday
evening session of the executive body of the ruling Republican Party.

Abraamian chaired the National Assembly from 2008 to November 2011,
when he resigned to head the Republican Party’s campaign staff.

The Republican Party led by President Serzh Sargsyan garnered 44.05%
of the vote in parliamentary elections on May 6, which guaranteed its
majority at the parliament and enabled it to form a new government
on its own.

The faction of the Armenian National Congress led by former President
Levon Ter-Petrosian is not taking part in the first parliamentary
session.

The faction of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun
did not take part in the elections of the parliamentary speaker.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
