Turkey says remarks by French presidential hopefuls on Armenian
allegations election gimmick

Ankara, 24 April: Turkish Foreign Ministry said Tuesday remarks by
French presidential candidates Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande
over the alleged anniversary of the Armenian allegations on the
incidents of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire were motivated by election
tactics.

“This is just another example of abusing controversial historical
issues for the sake of political calculations,” the ministry said in a
statement.

The statement said it was unfortunate to politicize history, adding
that clear-cut judgements and discriminatory approaches could not
serve to justice or to a true interpretation of history.

“What was expected of leading French politicians was to send out
constructive messages to support Turks and Armenian to reach a fair
memory,” the statement said.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
