Academics unite against oppression at universities
ISTANBUL – Hürriyet Daily News

GIT members say hundreds of university students are being prosecuted
or suspended from the university on accusations of `aiding terrorist
organizations’.
Academics have raised their voice to denounce the `oppression and
intimidation’ they say they are encountering at Turkish universities.

`Academics are being intimidated, fired or suspended from their
positions by rectors or the Higher Educational Council [YÃ-K] because
of their research topics or political ideas. And there are hundreds of
university students that are being prosecuted or suspended from the
university on accusations of `aiding terrorist organizations.’ The
situation is outrageous,’ Galatasaray University Professor Ahmet İnsel
told journalists at a press conference in Istanbul.

Solidarity network

Some 400 academics from 50 different universities in Turkey and abroad
have formed a solidarity network called `International Workshop Group
for Freedom of Research and Education’ to act as a watchdog to
document and prevent oppression in Turkish universities.

`Today, a wide policy of oppression and intimidation is being
systematically implemented in universities under the name of a `fight
on terror.’ Hundreds of university students have been arrested like
this,’ İnsel said.

`Our colleague, Professor BüÅ?ra Ersanlı, was arrested on
unsubstantiated accusations and has been in prison for 108 days.
However, she has devoted all her life to maintaining peace. This is
the last straw,’ said Professor Zeynep Gambetti, an assistant
professor at BoÄ?aziçi University.

Ersanlı was arrested three and a half months ago for her alleged
connections with the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), the alleged
urban wing of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is
listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey and much of the
international community.

Academics who are especially known for their work on the Kurdish or
Armenian issues, as well as those known for being political opponents
of the government, are being systematically suspended from
universities, Gambetti said.

ANKARA: Turks Are from Mars, Americans Are from Venus

Turks Are from Mars, Americans Are from Venus

by Asli Aydintasbas
[translated from Turkish]

Washington – I turned Washington upside down in the aftermath of
Foreign Minister AhmetDavutoglu’s four-day visit to the US capital to
get a sense of reactions on the Turkish and US sides as well as in the
Obama administration and in the US Congress. This is how I came up
with the mischievous title of this article.

One senior US official who attended Davutoglu’s seven-hour marathon
meeting at the beginning of the week told me: “I can say that we are
fully on the same page.” However, that is not how it appeared to me.
Let me explain. In my last article, I wrote – as a person who has
followed Turkish-US relations closely since 1996 – that this trip
featured several “firsts” for me. This is the first time in 15 years
that I am seeing this much cordiality between Washington and Ankara –
a coordination that deserves the description “second honeymoon.”

Ironically, like several other commentators, I had thought that the
breakdown in Turkish-Israeli relations would cost [Turkey] dearly in
Washington and that doors in this city would be slammed shut one by
one in the face of the AKP [Justice and Development Party] government.
The exact opposite has happened. Because of the Arab Spring and the
[NATO] Missile Shield, Ankara has become the “shining star” of the US
capital in the full sense of that term. Of course, this situation may
change abruptly but this is how it is now. In the past, Turkish
officials would rejoice if their 45-minute appointment was extended to
one hour. This time, the US Congress and administration fell only a
step short of laying a red carpet for Davutoglu. The foreign ministers
of the two countries and their aides met for several hours even though
they gotten together again in Munich only last week.

What did they discuss? For the purpose of formalities, the US side
allocated five minutes each to Cyprus, the protocols with Armenia, and
the Heybeliada seminary. For the purpose of formalities, Hillary
Clinton referred to the status of the media and freedom of the press
[in Turkey] in her private meeting with the foreign minister. However,
the two real items on the agenda of the two countries was Iran and
Syria. Indeed, the title of this article was inspired by the
difference between the postures of the two countries with respect to
Syria. Yes, as the US official told me, both countries are “on the
same page.” In other words, both believe that the Bashar al-Asad
regime has lost its legitimacy and that it has to go. However, things
get more complicated beyond that point.

The Americans do not want “to take on any responsibilities” [in Syria]
because this is an election year, because they are exhausted with war,
because matters are spinning out of control in Libya and Iraq, because
they have to cope with a nuclear Iran, and because of a thousand
reasons they explained for several hours. They are not inclined to
support any buffer zones or humanitarian corridors, nor are they
willing to help the Free Syrian Army, which is composed of soldiers
defecting from the Syrian army. Frankly, even I did not expect this
much reluctance. However, the officials I interviewed all explained to
me why certain things “could not be done.”

In contrast, Turkey has no intention of sitting on the sidelines with
its hands tied when scores of people are being killed in a
neighbouring country every day, although it is unambiguously opposed
to any military intervention. Now there is a plan that Turkey has put
on the table for the first time – or let us call it “almost a plan.”
Ankara is proposing to increase diplomatic pressure, to force the
option of creating humanitarian aid corridors to cities such as Hama
and Hims, and, if necessary, to enlist the involvement of the UN, the
Red Cross, and the Red Crescent. Ankara wants to find ways of
providing material and moral assistance to the popular movement inside
Syria working in collaboration with the Arab League and the UN. This
is making the US side to think in terms of “what can we do” rather
than “there is, unfortunately, nothing that can be done.”

As I said, this visit was a first for me. It was the exact opposite of
the picture I hadseen for many years.I am seeing for the first time a
Turkey that is “pressing” its regional activism against a United
States that wishes to remain “passive” with many “buts” and excuses of
“realism.” It is hard to say where this may lead. The people in Syria
will insist on not retreating from their revolution. I think that the
Martians will eventually convince the Venusians in diplomacy also. Is
this not always the case in real life?

Tarasov: `Time for the world to know the truth about NK war’

Tarasov: `It is time for the world to know the truth about Nagorno Karabakh war’

A book by the expert Stanislav Tarasov named `Myths about Karabakh
conflict’ is published, `REGNUM’ news agency informs.

The book consists of the articles written by the author on 2009-2011
years. The book opens many falsifications about NK conflicts which are
widely spread among the people.

`It is time to know the truth about the tragedy and heroism which took
place in Karabakh’, Tarasov noted.

According to him in future new publications about Nagorno Karabakh
conflict will be typed.

`The book tells about the regional geopolitics and about the relations
between two main players of the region. We use the method which
excludes any evaluations and comment by us, we are not judges here. We
have decided to remove the whole information wave which exists between
the sides and just to show the facts, to speak based on the documents.
When you get acquainted with the documents’ archives, you realize that
many facts are just ignored’, Tarasov noted.

According to him the fixation of the operative situation is also a
task. It is needed to realize the concrete steps which are held to
settle NK conflict.

`We believe that without participation of the conflicting sides,
including Karabakh, this conflict can not be settled. This is the main
idea’, the politician noted.

According to him the presentation of the facts will support to settle
the NK issue rightly.

Tarasov noted that the truth must be known in the context of the
political-diplomatic settlement. At the same time the expert considers
that that some forces lead the conflict to the deadlock.

Azerbaijani cinemas cancel Russian war movie

Azerbaijani cinemas cancel Russian war movie
Februray 18, 2012

[Summary: In spite of their project being 88% government funded,
producers say “August. Eight” is not political. Commentators in
Georgia call it pro-Kremlin and criticize the portrayal of Georgians
as aggressors.]

TBILISI, DFWatch – Just days before the premiere, two cinemas in
Azerbaijan have decided not to show a new Russian movie set during the
2008 Russia-Georgia war.

Much of the new movie `August. Eight’ was shot in Abkhazia and South
Ossetia and the backdrop to the story is the war as seen from the
Russian side of events, but director Dzhanik Fayziev rejects that it
is a political film.

21 February is the world premiere of `August. Eight’. Before its
release in Baku, a campaign was started against it on Facebook driven
by Georgian-Azerbaijani solidarity regarding breakaway areas. Russia
does not support Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Facebook campaign was successful and lead Park Cinema to pull the
film off its schedule, as well as recalling all advertisement
material. Now also Azerbaijan Cinema has followed suit.

`August. Eight’ has been criticized as Kremlin propaganda by
commentators in Georgia; it portrays Georgia as the aggressor and
filming took place inside both of Georgia’s disputed regions. Some
scenes were filmed on an elaborate set built in Sukhumi.

Filming took place between March and August 2011. In addition to
Sukhumi and Tskhinvali, scenes were also filmed at spots around the
North Caucasus, including the city Tkuarchal, the villages Ursdon and
Nar, along the Georgian military highway and in the Darial gorge. A
trailer was released onto the internet.

Fantasy. 33 out of 120 minutes is a parallel story line which takes
place in the imagination of a young boy, made by computer generated
imagery. The script is written by Michael Lerner and based on a fiairy
tale by Danish writer H.C. Andersen.

The project was heavily supported by the Russian government. Apart
from being almost entirely financed by the state film fund – 16.7
million out of its total production cost of 19 million US dollars –
actors also received training at a Russian Ministry of Internal
Affairs base.

But director Fayziev maintains that it is not political, but part love
story, part fantasy. Some of the story is based on Danish writer H.C.
Andersen’s fairy tale The Snow Queen. It was developed into a film
script by the American Michael Alan Lerner, an experienced war
reporter who in 2004 made a film called `Deadlines’ about the
difficulty of reporting the truth in times of conflict, set in the
Beirut war in 1983.

The fantasy parts of `August. Eight’ take place inside a little boy’s
mind, made by computer generated imagery which takes up 33 out of the
film’s 120 minutes. The rest is about his mother, played by Svetlana
Ivanova, who comes after him to Tskhinvali to save him after the war
breaks out.

This is the third film made with the 2008 South Ossetia war as a
backdrop. The Russian-made `War 08.08.08′ was released only three
months after the war and perceived as heavily politicized. `5 Days of
August’ of last year was a Hollywood film with Georgian scriptwriter
and co-producer. It was not financed by the Georgian government except
in the early stages, but is widely perceived as telling the story of
the war from President Mikheil Saakashvili’s point of view. It starred
Andy Garcia and had a budget of 12 million US dollars. `August. Eight’
cost 19 million dollars to make.

BAKU: Pro-Armenian Congressmen Pressure Hillary Clinton Into Retract

PRO-ARMENIAN CONGRESSMEN PRESSURE HILLARY CLINTON INTO RETRACTING HER STATEMENT ON RECENT FRENCH LEGISLATIVE BILL

APA
Feb 17 2012
Azerbaijan

Recently, the Armenian-American special interest groups have launched
a campaign, led by Congressmen Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Robert Dold, Jr.

(R-IL), to pressure the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, into
retracting her statement on the recent French legislative bill
criminalizing the denial of the so-called “Armenian genocide”.

APA reported that in their part, the Azerbaijani Americans urge their
representatives not to co-sign the “Schiff-Dold” letter and to defend
Secretary Clinton’s just position on freedom of expression and against
legislating history.

“Commenting on this legislation, withheld for review by France’s
Constitutional Council after clearing both chambers of the French
Parliament, Secretary Clinton accurately indicated that the law was
compromising free speech and that the issue is a matter of historical
debate by scholars”, say the Azeri Diaspora members in their letters
to the elected officials.

“Furthermore, according to a renowned expert of the Ottoman history,
Professor Bernard Lewis of Princeton University, there was no
“deliberate preconceived decision of the Ottoman government” to
eliminate Armenians and the claim that the inter-communal warfare
atrocities were a genocide constitutes only “the Armenian version
of the history”. Besides Armenians, over 518,000 Turkish civilians
were massacred during World War I by the paramilitaries of Armenian
Revolutionary Federation supported by invading Russian forces
in Eastern Anatolia. So, Secretary Clinton’s assertion that the
allegations of the so-called “Armenian genocide” are a matter of
historical debate by scholars is absolutely correct”, read the letters.
