YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 3, ARMENPRESS: The Coordination Council of Armenian
Organizations in France has circulated a statement before discussion
of the Armenian Bill at the country’s Constitutional Council. The
statement calls on the French-Armenians to concentrate their forces
as much as possible, Armenpress reports.

“Adoption of the bill criminalizing the Armenian Genocide Denial
will be a world-level victory against the denial policy of Turkey,
which has invested its last forces in this fight,” the statement runs.

French-Armenians note that the Turkish legislative and executive
authorities exert pressure on the members of the Constitutional
Council of France.

“Does the bill contradict the constitution? Our answer is very distinct
~V no. We do not demand caring attitude, but justice. We are fighting
not against the French citizens of Turkish descent, but against the
Turkish state denial policy,” the statement reads.

The Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations in France is sure
that President Sarkozy will be resolute in bringing the work he has
started to an end. French-Armenians also trust in the soberness of
the members of the Constitutional Council and are ready even to apply
to the European Court of Human Rights for proving the truthfulness
of their work.

(TRT) has broadcast the first episode of a nine-hour-plus documentary
on the Holocaust which has sparked reactions from Turkish community,
Armenpress reports.

“Shoah”- the Hebrew word for the Holocaust – is a 1985 French
documentary directed by Claude Lanzmann which was aired on Thursday
as part of an Israeli campaign to fight Holocaust denial and to halt
what some Jewish groups have called increasing anti-Semitism in Turkey.

The documentary mainly consists of interviews with those who survived
Holocaust, exploring the alleged killing of European Jews in Nazi
death camps during the World War II.

It is the first time a predominantly Muslim country shows such a film
on state TV.

The documentary was also aired amid the dispute between Turkey and
France about French legislation to criminalize the denial of the
Armenian Genocide.

ARMENIAN MP DESCRIBES ADOPTION OF BILL BY FRENCH SENATE AS RESTORATION OF JUSTICE

YEREVAN

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 3, ARMENPRESS: The adoption of bill penalizing the
denial of the Armenian Genocide is restoration of justice almost after
a century since it was committed, member of the RPA party’s faction
Karine Atchemyan told a news conference today, stressing that many
in Europe first learnt about it during the debates and adoption of
the bill by the French Senate.

“Using pressure Turkey is trying to present the adoption of bill in
a way convenient to it. It is being explained with the geo-political
and personal pre-electoral interests, but the fact remains that as a
result Turkey is being presented to the community with its real face,”
the MP said.

grandmaster? Photograph: Graphic Levon Aronian shrugged off an
early loss to the world No1 Magnus Carlsen and a late defeat by a
tail-ender to win first prize at Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee this week
with impressive authority. The Armenian world No2’s 9/13 total was a
point clear of Carlsen, Teimour Radjabov, and the Italian 19-year-old
Fabiano Caruana who shared second prize.

The elite events which make up the chess equivalent of a Grand Slam
include Moscow’s Tal Memorial and the London Classic as well as Wijk.

Aronian was subdued in London, but he tied first with Carlsen in
Moscow and his overall rating is closing in on the Norwegian’s.

Aged 29 and at the height of his powers, Aronian would have been a
good bet to capture Vishy Anand’s official world title this spring had
he not frozen with nerves and a bug at last year’s candidates matches.

He has a rich and imaginative style of play which makes a bigger
impression on experts than Carlsen’s marathon grinds. It is not an
exact parallel, but the difference between them is akin to Boris
Spassky and Tigran Petrosian in the world title matches of the 1960s.

Aronian’s best win at Wijk was an all-round tour de force which showed
his depth of preparation and his strategic and tactical flair. His
Dutch teenage opponent was prepared for the opening, but failed to
grasp the strength of Black’s 13…Rxf3 sacrifice. Black’s ensuing
attack steadily gained momentum until its imaginative climax 41…Ne1!

and 42…Qf4+! when if 43 Nxf4 Rxe1 mate.

Giri had impressed when winning at Reggio a few weeks earlier but
the17-year-old lost five games in a row at Wijk and ended last.

Caruana, in contrast, made his break-through into the top 10, and is
the first top flight grandmaster ever from Italy.

China’s Hou Yifan, 17, played the tournament of her life at Tradewise
Gibraltar which ended on Thursday. She defeated several elite GMs,
shared first prize on 8/10 with Nigel Short won won their play-off,
and beat the all-time No1 woman Judit Polgar.
