JAGLAND: HISTORY SHOULD BE LEFT TO HISTORIANS

As the French Senate on Monday debated a bill that seeks punishment
for anyone who rejects the term â~@~genocideâ~@~] as the appropriate
description for the mass murders of Armenians in 1915, Council of
Europe (CoE) Secretary-General Thorbjorn Jagland voiced disapproval
of the bill, saying history should be left to the historians.

Jagland, who attended the inauguration of a photo exhibition by the
Anatolia news agency in Strasbourg, met with Deputy Prime Minister
Bülent Arınç on the sidelines of the ceremony.

When Arınç called on the Council of Europe to take action against the
erosion of European values through moves such as the one in France,
Jagland said he does not find it right for politicians to debate
history as he believes history should be left to the historians.

Jagland also said it is the duty of the Council of Europe to fight
against the rising xenophobia and hatred in Europe.

The photo exhibition opened by Anatolia at the Parliamentary Assembly
of the Council of Europe (PACE) building in Strasbourg is titled
â~@~Somali’de Ä°nsan Olmakâ~@~] (Being Human in Somalia) and features
photos from the country, which suffered the worst drought of the past
60 years over the summer.
