RELATIVES OF MARCH 1 EVENTS VICTIMS DISAPPOINTED WITH PACE CO-RAPPORTEUR

Relatives of those killed at the 2008 post-election unrest are
disappointed with the visit of the Co-Rapporteur of PACE Monitoring
Committee John Prescott who is on a two-day visit to Armenia.

Alla Hovhannisyan, the mother of Tigran Khachatryan, one of those
killed, told Tert.am that Prescott spared only 21 minutes for the
meeting with them, adding that the meeting looked like an obligation.

“This was not a meeting, but rather an obligation. He did not want
to meet with us and did so only because we had complained that we
would otherwise hold campaigns,” explained she.

At least ten people were killed, several wounded and dozens arrested
during March 1, 2, 2008, clashes with riot police as opposition took
to the streets, claiming the presidential vote had been stolen.

Alla Hovhannisyan further said that John Prescott did not almost
listen to them, only saying that he was aware of everything.

“Our main question relates to the recent report of the co-rapporteurs,”
said Hovhannisyan, adding that the co-rapporteurs did not have
the right to declare that the page of the March 1, 2 events can be
considered closed.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
