ARMENIAN OPPOSITION TO INFORM PACE CO-RAPPORTEUR OF PRE-ELECTION FUSS

Opposition Armenian party Heritage will inform co-rapporteur of the
Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe John Prescott about
proposals by opposition forces over shifting to an absolutely
proportional election system.

Speaking to Tert.am, Zaruhi Postanjyan said they will inform the PACE
co-rapporteur about it during his upcoming two-day visit to Armenia
from January 16-17.

“The HHK [Republican Party of Armenia] must take into account the
resolution adopted by the Venice Committee and must go for such an
amendment,” said she.

Postanjyan also said that the resolution stipulates that the best
version is the proportional representation. David Harutyunyan from
the ruling HHK party also voted in favor of the resolution, she added.

“Otherwise … if they do not fully shift to proportional
representation, they should at least reduce mandates of majoritarian
system,” she explained, they will try to have John Prescott explain
why the republicans oppose to the idea of completely shifting to
proportional representation.
