OSCE MINSK GROUP CO-CHAIRS MEET WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF AZERBAIJANI COMMUNITY OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH

OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs Robert Bradtke, of the United States,
Bernard Fassier, France, Igor Popov, and Russia, met with
representatives of the Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh
in Baku.

Representatives of the Azerbaijani community once again informed the
mediators about the will of internally displaced persons to return to
their land as soon as possible, Bayram Safarov the head of the Public
Association Azerbaijani community of Nagorno-Karabakh said to Trend.

The new French co-chair of OSCE Minsk Group, Jacques Faure, who will
replace Bernard Fassier was presented to the community representatives

Visit of mediators in the region began on Nov. 28. After Yerevan
they conducted monitoring in the Gazakh district of Azerbaijan,
which is bordering with Armenia, and then arrived in Baku. Today,
mediators met with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and
Defense Minister Safar Abiyev.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
