Turkey plays major role but cannot be EU member state – Sarkozy

Turkey plays an important role, but it cannot be a EU member country,
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Friday at a news conference
on the results of his state visit to Armenia.

“My opinion as to the role of Turkey, which I consider substantial,
the role of a bridge between the East and the West – remains an
absolutely invariable position” for years, Sarkozy said. “I have held
this opinion for many years and I don’t see any sense in introducing
any changes in it,” he added.

He said there had been certain differences on that issue with his
predecessor – Jacques Chirac.
