At the United Nation’s Youth Short Film Competition that kicked
off in Yerevan on Friday, a young Armenian artist, Narek Avetisyan,
displayed 33 canvases featuring the famous heroine of 17th century
painter Johannes Vermeer.

By portraying Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” in the painting
styles of 33 different artists, Avetisyan attempted to reflect the
highest perceptions of the original canvass.

It took the artist four years to create the painting series. He
selected the Girl with a Pearl Earring, considering her image unique
in the history of portraits.

The competition devoted to the International Youth Day has been
organized in Yerevan since 1999. It is aimed at encouraging the youth
to change the world through art.

The exhibition will run through August 6.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
