ARMENIA WILL REMAIN IN MY HEART – YOVANOVICH

On June 7, Americans and Armenians celebrated the 235th anniversary of
American independence and the signing of the Declaration of
Independence.

According to a press release by the US Embassy in Yerevan, Ambassador
Marie L Yovanovitch and Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly
Hovik Abrahamyan delivered remarks at the celebration, which took
place at the US Embassy. Inga and Anush Arshakians opened the event by
singing the US National Anthem, and the Armenian State Jazz Band
played American jazz music.

During the event, the US Embassy to Armenia also marked the departure
of Ambassador Yovanovitch, who will return to Washington DC to work as
the Deputy Assistant Secretary for North and Central Europe at the
Department of State. Ambassador Yovanovitch took the opportunity to
congratulate Armenia on 20 years of independence and toasted the
U.S.-Armenian friendship based on mutual support and respect for
democracy, freedom, and peace.

“Armenians and Americans enjoy a strong bond that began long before
Armenia’s independence. And for the last twenty years, the United
States has steadfastly supported Armenia’s democratization, economic
growth, and security,” the Ambassador said in her speech.

“Today’s celebration symbolizes this on-going partnership. There’s
nothing we can’t accomplish, no challenge we can’t meet, if we pursue
common goals and seek common ground.”

The ambassador also expressed regret for having to depart Armenia
after three years of tenure and said she was hopeful to see the
country’s progress in the years to come.

“Armenia will remain in my heart,” she said. “I wish that I could be
here to witness this country’s continuing progress, especially in the
pivotal next two years.”

“So let me take this opportunity to congratulate Armenia on 20 years
of independence and wish the Armenian people my very best as you build
the Armenia of tomorrow,” Yovanovich said.

Independence Day honors the birthday of the United States of America
and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
