HRANT’S FRIENDS DEMAND TURKISH JUDICIARY FIND JOURNALIST’S REAL KILLERS

Turkey’s judicial system must prosecute those who helped plan the
murder of journalist Hrant Dink rather than just pursue the triggerman,
a group known as Hrant’s Friends said this week, writes Hurriyet
Daily News.

“Starting from the first day, we said that we will not be satisfied
with a couple of hit men being imprisoned; we want their bigger
brothers to be arrested,” theater actor Mehmet Esen said on behalf
of the group.

Some 19 people are currently being tried in connection with the
Armenian-Turkish journalist’s murder. Erhan Tuncel and Yasin Hayal,
who are both under arrest in connection with the 2007 killing, were
present at the courthouse Monday for a hearing.

The protesters Monday included intellectuals, some independent
candidate deputies supported by the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy
Party, or BDP, as well as Dink’s window, Rakel Dink.

The Armenian-Turkish newspaper editor, who was shot in the back on
January 19, 2007, was a Turkish citizen of Armenian origin who had
been working to re-establish ties between Turks and Armenians. His
assassination hit the country hard and has brought together people
from different backgrounds to demand that all those involved in his
murder be brought to justice
