The attitude of Armenian MPs to the Deauville statement is not
unequivocal. First, it does not distinguish between the policies of
Armenia and Azerbaijan. His approach of the Co-Chairs of viewing the
two on an equal level, representative of ARF Dashnaktsutyun Artsvik
Minasyan says. However, he sees also certain opportunities for the
Armenian side, as well.

“Armenia can and should demand to recognize NKR as the party to the
conflict,” he said.

Secretary of ARF faction Artyusha Shahbazyan calls attention to
another provision of the statement. In the statement the Presidents
“strongly urge the leaders of the sides to prepare their populations
for peace, not war.” Artyusha Shahbazyan says the message is addressed
to Azerbaijan.

The statement calls upon the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan
to demonstrate their political will by finalizing the Basic
Principles during their upcoming summit in June. Hovhannes
Margaryan from Orinats Yerkir Party does not view this as pressure on
Armenia. According to the MP, Armenia has always backed the peaceful
settlement of the conflict. Besides, there have been precedents in
international practice, when the principle of the right of peoples
to self-determination has prevailed over the principle of territorial
integrity.

The MPs have concluded from the statement that the Co-Chairs
appreciate Russia’s activity in the settlement process. In general,
the statement I positive for Armenia, Head of the Republican faction
Galust Sahakyan said.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
