CAIRO, MARCH 30, NOYAN TAPAN. The third international conference
entitled "The Role of the Armenians in the Economy of the Arab World"
was held at the Center of Armenian Studies of Cairo University on
March 29-30.

The participants were welcomed by the Armenian Ambassador to Egypt
Armen Melkonian and the Director of the Center of Armenian Studies
Zeinab Abu Sinna who expressed their high opinion of the center’s
contribution to development of Armenian-Arab cooperation in the
spheres of science, education and culture.

Among the participants were about two dozen scholars from Egypt,
Armenia, Syria, Lebanon, and the United States. They gave reports on
the history of Armenian-Arab economic relations in various periods.

The speakers pointed out the exceptional role of Armenians in the
development of trade and different branches of the economy of the
Middle East. The center made a decision to publish a separate edition
of the conference materials.

The RA MFA Press and Information Department reported that following the
conference, the Armenian embassy in Cairo hosted an event attended by
the staff of Cairo University, the participants, and Egyptian Deputy
Minister of Education Muhammad Gaber.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
