"Sargsyan Pledged To Withdraw Armenian Troops"

"SARGSYAN PLEDGED TO WITHDRAW ARMENIAN TROOPS"

Jirayr Sefilyan, commander of the Shushi special military brigade and
one of the founders of Sardarapat Initiative, thinks Serzh Sargsyan
pledged to withdraw Armenian troops from the liberated territories
during a recent meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev
in Munich.

Only a few days before the meeting Azerbaijani Foreign Minister
announced they would not resume negotiations unless the Armenian side
removed the troops from the "occupied territories."

In fact, the Azerbaijani side didn’t stop the talks after the Munich
meeting which means Armenia gave pledges to them," Jirayr Sefilyan
told A1+.

He thinks that in the talks Azerbaijan uses the method of blackmail
against Armenia and dictates its will to us.

"We need not see a signed document to understand that the regime is
going to surrender our lands. The point is that the Armenian side is
losing day by day and it will be hard for us to regain the lost."

In reply to Azerbaijan’s warlike announcements, Jirayr Sefilian said,
"Azerbaijanis should realize that if they wage a war it will end
with Azerbaijan’s capitulation. Azerbaijan is deluded if it relies on
our buffoon authorities and their myrmidon top brass since Armenians
still preserve the potential they displayed in 1994.

Serzh Sargsyan realizes that he has taken treacherous steps and has
appeared in an awkward situation. He knows that Armenians treat the
liberated territories as a sanctuary and he is afraid of it.

On the other hand, Serzh Sargsyan has promised the international
community to obey their orders. Today Mr. Sargsyan faces a dilemma
for he cannot meet the demands of his people or foreigners. The only
thing to do in the given situation is to resign office, I think."

Balakian To Present "Armenian Golgotha" At Museum Of Jewish Heritage

BALAKIAN TO PRESENT "ARMENIAN GOLGOTHA" AT MUSEUM OF JEWISH HERITAGE DEC. 2 NEW EXHIBIT ON THE MORGENTHAU FAMILY FEATURES "RACE EXTERMINATION" TELEGRAM

New York – In conjunction with a new exhibit on the Morgenthau
family, author and translator Peter Balakian will present the English
translation of Armenian Golgotha, his great-uncle’s landmark memoir of
the Armenian Genocide, at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, on Wednesday,
December 2, at 7 p.m.

New York County District Attorney Robert Morgenthau will introduce Mr.

Balakian. Preceding the talk will be a gallery tour of The Morgenthaus:
A Legacy of Service, at 6 p.m., for which preregistration is required.

A key witness to genocide

On April 24, 1915, Fr. Grigoris Balakian was arrested along with
some 250 other intellectuals and leaders of Constantinople’s Armenian
community. It was the beginning of the Ottoman Turkish government’s
systematic attempt to eliminate the Armenian people from Turkey,
a campaign that continued through World War I and the fall of the
Ottoman Empire, by which time more than a million Armenians had been
annihilated and expunged from their historic homeland.

For Fr. Grigoris, himself condemned, it was also the beginning of a
four-year ordeal.

He saw his compatriots sent in carts, on donkeys, or on foot to
face certain death in the desert of northern Syria. Many would not
even survive the journey, suffering starvation, disease, mutilation,
and rape, among other tortures, or being slaughtered outright en route.

Miraculously, Fr. Grigoris managed to escape. His memoir brings to
life the survivors, foreign witnesses, and Turkish officials involved
in the Armenian Genocide, and also those few brave, righteous Turks,
who, with some of their German allies, resisted orders calling for
the death of the Armenians.

This powerful book, newly released in English translation, has been
praised by Elie Wiesel and critics worldwide as a classic of survivor
literature. The New Yorker called Armenian Golgotha a "fascinating,
first-hand testimony to a monumental crime."

Peter Balakian is the author of The Burning Tigris: The Armenian
Genocide and America’s Response, winner of the 2005 Raphael Lemkin
Prize, a New York Times best seller, and a New York Times Notable
Book; Black Dog of Fate, winner of the PEN/Albrand Award for Memoir,
also a New York Times Notable Book; and June-tree: New and Selected
Poems, 1974-2000.

The Donald M. and Constance H. Rebar Professor of the Humanities at
Colgate University is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a
fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Grigoris Balakian
was his great-uncle.

The Morgenthau legacy

The Morgenthaus: A Legacy of Service, on view through December 2010,
profiles three generations of an extraordinary family. Occupying the
museum’s Overlook gallery, the exhibit makes use of newly discovered
film footage, personal artifacts, and rare documents that changed
the course of history.

They show how Ambassador Henry Morgenthau, Sr., Franklin D. Roosevelt’s
Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr., and New York County
District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau came close to world events –
including the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, refugee crises, and
the formation of the State of Israel – and felt compelled to respond
as both Americans and Jews.

Henry Morgenthau, Sr., (1856-1946) graduated from Columbia Law School,
ran successful businesses in law and real estate, and was the founding
president of Rabbi Wise’s Free Synagogue. After his success in the
private sector, he made the decision to devote the rest of his life
to serving his country and the causes in which he believed.

Appointed ambassador to the Ottoman Empire in 1913 as World War I was
looming, Mr. Morgenthau in the first two years of his post witnessed
the poverty of Jewish settlers in Palestine. A menorah he acquired
on his first trip to the region (then a part of the empire) in 1914
is among the artifacts on view.

Shocking dispatches from American consuls and missionaries
stationed in the interior of the empire alerted Amb. Morgethau
to the Turkish persecution of the Armenians. In a telegram to the
U.S. State Department, he warned: "it appears that a campaign of
race extermination is in progress." This important document from the
National Archives is a highlight of the exhibit.

During his ambassadorship, Morgenthau called attention to the
sufferings of Christians and Jews in the Empire and helped supply
direct aid and relief. Afterwards he continued to speak out about
conditions for Jews and minorities abroad, and to raise funds on
their behalf. Starting in the 1930s he personally provided direct
assistance to dozens of families that fled Nazism.

Another telegram on display was sent by World Jewish Congress Secretary
Gerhart Riegner to Rabbi Stephen Wise in 1942 about the Nazis’ plans
to exterminate all Jews in Germany and German-controlled areas in
Europe; this information was breaking news obtained through Riegner’s
private contacts.

The exhibit, funded by The Isenberg Family Charitable Trust, Marina
and Stephen E. Kaufman, Lois and Martin Whitman, Jack Rudin, and New
York State Senator Eric T. Schneiderman, includes additional artifacts
from the lives and careers of Amb. Morgenthau’s distinguished son
and grandson, Henry Morgenthau, Jr., and Robert Morgenthau.

Monitoring was held on the contact line between Armenian and
Azerbaijani armed forces on Nov.25, after a mandate by the special
envoy of the OSCE chairman. The monitoring near the Yusifjanli village
in Azerbaijan’s Agdam region region proceeded without incident on
Nov.25, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported.

The monitoring was held on the Azerbaijani side by OSCE
Chairman-in-Office Personal Representative field assistants Pieter
Ki and Vladimir Chountulov

The monitoring was held on the opposite side, which the
international community recognizes as Azerbaijani territory, by OSCE
Chairman-in-Office Personal Representative Andrzej Kasprzyk’s field
assistants Imre Palatinus, Irji Aberli and Jaslan Nurtazin.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan
lost all of Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojali in December
1991. In 1992-93, Armenian armed forces occupied Shusha, Khojali and 7
districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed
a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia,
France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.

The OSCE regularly holds monitoring on troop’s contact line to secure
ceasefire.

Cypriot House of Representatives President and Democratic Party leader
(DIKO) Marios Garoyian called on international community to recognize
Armenian Genocide, Financial Mirror reports.

The source quotes Garoyian, as saying, "I believe we have the duty
to remember the Armenian Genocide and reaffirm our steadfast faith
towards the struggle for international recognition of that terrible
crime which marked the fate and the course of the Armenian people."

"Garoyian pointed to recent attempt by Turkey to normalize relations
with Armenia as another attempt by Turkey to deny justice to the
Armenian people. He described agreements signed by Yerevan and Ankara
as an ‘attempt of the Turkish government’ to falsify history though
so-called peace with Armenia," the website reads.

Democratic Party leader drew parallels, comparing struggle of Armenian
people with ‘the efforts by Cyprus to overcome nearly 3 decades of
Turkish occupation of the northern half of the island."

"Justice and freedom is what we want for our common country, Cyprus,
which for 35 years now suffers the consequences of the Turkish invasion
and occupation," Garoyian said.

BAKU: Political Scientist: Armenians Have Made The Biggest Mistake

POLITICAL SCIENTIST: ARMENIANS HAVE MADE THE BIGGEST MISTAKE

Araz Alizade "Armenians’ thesis of ‘long-suffering’ does not work
anymore.

Everyone is sick and tired with their constant complaints and the
West seems to have decided that it is time to show them their place",
political scientist Araz Alizade has said commenting on the statements
of Liberty radio that called Armenia an aggressor.

"No president or the head of state will enjoy being blackmailed while
the presidents of the United States, France and other countries are
under constant blackmail of Armenians. Certainly, they do not like
this state and they have found a way to keep Armenians under pressure,

By using occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia, these western
leaders will hold this argument as the sword of Damocles. On the whole,
by continuing occupation of Azerbaijani lands, Armenians have made
the greatest mistake as it has become a punishment for them and they
will always be reminded about it", Alizade said.

He predicts growing pressure on Armenia in case it continues
protracting the Karabakh conflict settlement. "But cheer us: the
worst is to come yet. The West and Russia seem to be fed up and to
have decided that it is time to end the Karabakh conflict that is
just a headache".

EP Draft Resolution Calls On Turkey To Contribute To Cyprus Solution

EP DRAFT RESOLUTION CALLS ON TURKEY TO CONTRIBUTE TO CYPRUS SOLUTION

Financial Mirror

Cyprus

The European Parliament, in a motion for a resolution on enlargement,
calls on Turkey to actively contribute to the swift solution of the
Cyprus problem, on the basis of UN Security Council decisions and
EU principles.

According to a press release, the European Parliament says current
and potential candidate countries must continue reforming to stay on
track for eventual EU membership.

"Key issues, such as rule of law, freedom of expression, treatment
of ethnic minorities and the fight against corruption and organised
crime must still be addressed," according to the draft resolution,
which was approved by the Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday and is
scheduled for a plenary vote on November 26.

In the chapter on Turkey, the European Parliament "calls on the
Turkish government to contribute actively to the swift devising of
a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question."

The draft resolution highlights the importance of a swiftly
implementing judicial reform to improve the functioning of the Turkish
state and society.

MEPs regret the limited progress made in the area of freedom of
religion and freedom of expression, following the unprecedented fine
imposed on a media group.

The non-fulfillment of commitments stemming from the Ankara Protocol
is also criticised, and Turkey is urged to proceed to its full and
non-discriminatory implementation.

Furthermore, the European Parliament welcomes Turkey’s signing of
the Nabucco gas pipeline agreement and calls for the opening of the
energy chapter in the accession negotiations.

Diplomatic efforts made to normalise relations with Armenia are
underlined. The Turkish Grand National Assembly, as well as the
Parliament of Armenia, should ratify the relevant protocols, the
resolution notes.
