UNLIKE KOCHARIAN, KAREN DEMIRJIAN DIDN’T SHOOT AT HIS OWN PEOPLE: LEVON TER-PETROSSIAN

Tert.am

Karen Demirjian’s bas-relief was affixed near the entrance to the very
same museum which bears his name. November 27 was chosen as the date of
this ceremony because, as noted by Demirjian’s widow Rima Demirjian,
on this day in 1974, Demirjian met the public for the first time and
with his words, Armenia’s steep upsurge began.

Participating in the opening ceremony were Armenian National Congress
leaders led by first president of the Republic of Armenia, Levon
Ter-Petrossian.

Speaking about Karen Demirjian during his speech, Ter-Petrossian wanted
to focus attention on that which, in his words, has been ignored for
20 years.

"That is the issue connected with Karen Demirjian and
Nagorno-Karabakh. Perhaps no one has assessed why on May 21, 1988, if
I’m not mistaken, they discharged Karen Demirjian from his post. Karen
Demirjian was discharged exclusively for one reason: he didn’t crush
the Karabakh movement, didn’t shoot his own people – something that
Gorbachev couldn’t forgive him for… For me, this is perhaps one
of the most historic, possibly the most important, pages of Karen
Demirjian’s life. The people’s leader, who didn’t go against his
people, unlike Robert Kocharian, who on March 1, cold-heartedly fired
at his own people, much like they shoot at elephants and rhinoceroses
in safaris," noted Ter-Petrossian.

The Armenian National Congress leader noted that it would be wrong
to identify Demirjian with the system.

"With the last count, Karen Demirjian became the system’s victim;
one shouldn’t and mustn’t identify him with the system," added
Ter-Petrossian.

SYSTEM OF A DOWN’S SERJ TANKIAN’S DAD TO RELEASE SOLO ALBUM

Tert.am
16:08 ~U 27.11.09

System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian issued the following update
on his official MySpace page:

"Being that the holidays are a time for being with family, I felt
it appropriate to update everyone about a project near and dear
to my heart, the debut album by my dad, Khatchadour. The album,
Inchbes Moranank, will be out in December at selected record stores,
iTunes and our very own web store at SerjicalStrike.com." MySpace
and Facebook profiles have also been created for Khatchadour.

According to the unofficial System of a Down website, SOADFans, this
collection of music features new recordings of traditional Armenian
folk songs that Khatchadour has sang for the majority of his life,
along with 2 brand new songs in "Hrant Dink" as well as the title track
"Inchbes Moranank."

Produced by son Serj with new arrangements from famous Armenian
composer Andranik Mouradian, the album is a collection of 11 songs
that brought the father and son team back to yesteryear, when the
love of singing was passed on from father to son.

"Growing up as a kid, he would sing and I might sing along with him.

So, I think in some ways, he put the love of music in me and more
specifically the love of singing." explains Serj of his father,

In Tokyo for an official visit yesterday, Armenian Foreign Minister
Edward Nalbandian met with Crown Prince Naruhito, heir apparent to
the Japanese throne, reports the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs press
and information department.

Nalbandian asked Naruhito to pass on RA President Serzh Sargsyan’s
greetings and well-wishes to Emperor Akihito and noted Armenia’s wish
to strengthen and develop relations with Japan.

During the second half of the day, Nalbandian made a detailed speech
about Armenia’s foreign policy at the Japan Institute of International
Affairs. During the speech, responding to questions directed at him,
the Armenian foreign minister discussed Armenia-Japan relations
and Armenia’s initiatives directed toward the development of these
relations, as well as discussing efforts toward establishing peace
and stability in the Caucasus.

Asked about the continuous bellicose statements made by Azerbaijan,
Nalbandian said, "Perhaps those [statements] are made with the
expectation of applying pressure, naturally, that cannot impress
neither Armenia nor Karabakh. Those attempts leave a flat-out negative
impression about Azerbaijan on the international community."

Before his speech, Nalbandian met with the institute’s President
and Director-General, Ambassador Yoshiji Nogami, during which time
issues related to the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs diplomatic
school and cooperation with the Japan Institute of International

A Visit To An Historic And Picturesque Land, Nagorno Karabakh

A VISIT TO AN HISTORIC AND PICTURESQUE LAND, NAGORNO KARABAKH
by Florence Avakian

Crystal clear lakes. Majestic forested mountains. Fertile green
valleys. Ancient churches and monuments. No, this is not Switzerland
or Austria. This is Nagorno-Karabagh, (Black Highland), a magical
sliver of land with a 2500 year old Armenian history and culture
which should be on every tourist’s menu.

A worldwide telethon on Thursday, Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day, broadcast
from Los Angeles, raised funds for the fortress city of Shushi,
the capital and cultural center of Nagorno-Karabagh historically,
and a living museum of this many centuries-old Armenian land.

Today, Nagorno-Karabagh (known as Artsagh to Armenians), is a
tourist friendly, independent republic with elected officials, and
a population anxious to share its rich history and culture with all
visitors. Tourists can feel safe with the advanced 21st century medical
system, and the clean water and food supply. And in October of 2010,
Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabagh’s capital city with its stone buildings
and cobbled streets, will have a new airport, easing travel between
Armenia and the republic.

Once part of Armenia, Nagorno-Karabagh was taken away in 1923 by
Stalin to placate Turkey and quell nationalism in the Soviet Union.

Again claimed in 1988 by its Armenian majority, it was militarily
invaded by Azerbaijan, and after six years of a devastating war,
the 150,000 residents of Nagorno-Karabagh, won the conflict against
Azerbaijan with its population of three million.

This victory against insurmountable odds restored the people’s
national pride, and solidified the people’s determination to build
a secure, peaceful and independent future. Nagorno-Karabagh Prime
Minister Ara Harutiunian attributes this victory to the people of
the region "who were, and are willing to die for their land, freedom
and independence." In addition," he notes, "those three, four million
people in Azerbaijan are not ready to sacrifice their lives for the
sake of depriving the Nagorno-Karabagh people of their freedom."

In the history of Nagorno-Karabagh, "no outside force has been able
to conquer it, and it will never do so in the future," he declares
with no hesitation, adding that the final settlement of the republic
can only be achieved by the will of the people, and must include the
implementation of the principle of the people’s self-determination.

The organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE Minsk
Group) based in Vienna is currently negotiating with Armenia and
Azerbaijan to finalize the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabagh
issue.

GLOBAL SIGNIFICANCE

The Nagorno Karabagh Republic has been historic Armenian land for
centuries. Armenia, being the first Christian nation on earth, is
replete with historic and beautiful chapels and churches throughout
Armenia and Nagorno-Karabagh. It is well known that one of Christ’s
disciples, Thaddeus who came to Armenia to spread Christ’s message, or
a pupil of his, is buried in the Tadevank monastery in Nagono-Karabagh
which was built in the fourth century. And the imposing Gantzasar
monastery, severely damaged during the war, and completely rebuilt,
is the repository of John the Baptist’s skull. "In terms of churches,
Nagorno Karabagh has global significance," states Prime Minister
Harutunyan.

Mesrob Mashdotz, the inventor of the Armenian alphabet, during the
5th century A.D.’s golden age of Armenian culture, opened the first
Armenian language school in the Amaras monastery in Nagorno-Karabagh’s
region of Martuni. And the town of Dikranagerd with a population in
the tenth century of more than 25,000, boasts a magnificent tree with
a twenty foot trunk. It is one of the oldest trees in the world.

Another scenic wonder is the Azogh cave, one of the world’s most
ancient, where Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon people, and prehistoric
animals lived. It was located on the crossroads of human migration.

Currently, Spanish scientists have been making excavations there.

Ecologically, Nagorno-Karabagh has imposing mountains, rivers,
and glorious vistas. Deer, ibex, antelope, bear are in abundance in
the forests.

Kelbajar, one of the republic’s most magnificent regions, with its
towering mountains, and medicinal waters, and sandwiched between
Armenia and Nagorno-Karabagh, supplies 85 percent of Armenia’s water
supply. Recently, a pan-Armenian symbolic action taken by students
from both Armenia and Karabagh was initiated there of walnut tree
planting, walnuts being one of the region’s most revered resources.

Also, construction of schools and multiple-storied homes and buildings
have been planned.

A visitor to Nagorno-Karabagh would find a trip to this historic and
picturesque land an unforgettable experience with timeless memories.

Turks Are Interested In Realty

TURKS ARE INTERESTED IN REALTY

Real estate workers say Turks are interested in the Armenian realty.

Have the Armenian real estate already agencies sold an apartment or
land to any Turk? According to the head of the Kentron real estate
agency Vahe Danielyan though they did not make such a deal but they got
a number of mails which are apparently sent by Turks. Vahe Danielyan
says that there was great number of mails on the eve of the signing
of the Armenian and Turkish protocols. Though the authors present
as Tom or use any other non-Turkish name, nevertheless the mails are
sent by Turks. "Turks are interested not in apartments but in factory
lands near Yerevan", says Vahe Danielyan noting that the authors of
the letters said they wanted to come to Armenia after October 11,
signing of the Armenian and Turkish protocols, to find an appropriate
version for them.

In answer to the question whether they will have the same feeling when
showing lands to Turks as they would have when showing to French or
English people, Danielyan said that from the point of business there
should be no difference.

The head though is afraid that the real estate market will activate
a little, but we have to think that if Turks open the border today
they may close it after six months and we will not have opportunities
to take our values back.

The head of the Cascade Realty agency Vardan Avagyan says by
legislation a foreigner does not have the right to buy land in
Armenia. "In other words, they have the right to buy realty but the
land on which it is, is not their property". Nevertheless, Vardan
Avagyan notes that by the opening of the Armenian and Turkish border,
the realty market will activate and adds that mainly shops, factories
will be sold which will cause much change.

Cascade Realty has not yet stipulated any deal with any Turk.

And the realtor Armen thinks the nationality does not matter as he
is already tired of the lack of deals.
