/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Again trees are being cut down in Yerevan, Ecolur
reports, referring to statements made by residents of different
regions of the Armenian capital. People speak about deep pruning of
trees, opposed by experts, botanists, ecologists. "This is a crime,
as trees cannot develop normally. Strong root system is deprived of
foliage, and tree nutrition balance is disturbed. As a result, the
tree is trying to survive, but cannot cope with the imbalance, and
it can even die. City’s green mass, protecting from toxic emissions
of transport and dust sharply reduces , " Anush Nersisyan, Doctor of
Biological Sciences, a senior researcher at the Institute of Botany,
National Academy of Sciences of Armenia said.

At various meetings and events, environmentalists have repeatedly
expressed the assumption that the reason for the deep cutting of
trees is to release a visible space for billboards. However, at the
official level, this assumption has repeatedly refuted.

PEACEFUL CONFLICT SETTLEMENT WILL CHANGE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY’S PERCEPTION OF REGION, SAYS HUNGARIAN PM

Armenia

Within the frames of an official visit to Hungary, the Republic of
Armenia President Serzh Sargsyan met Hungary’s Parliament Speaker
Bela Katona and Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai.

At the meeting with Katona, both parties placed importance on the
development of inter-parliamentary relations and cooperation in
international inter-parliamentary structures in order to propel
forward Armenia-Hungary relations.

At the meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai, the
possibilities to promote trade-economic cooperation were discussed.

The parties stated that the state visit of the Armenian president
to Hungary and the high-level political dialogue, on the one hand,
and the protocols on interagency cooperation signed in Budapest, on
the other, the Armenian-Hungarian business conference and contacts
create a favourable atmosphere for the development of trade-economic
relations between the two countries.

During their meeting, President Sargsyan and Prime Minister Bajnai
also referred to the anti-crisis measures taken by the governments
of the two countries to overcome the complications caused by the
global economic crisis and the existing situation in the global
economy. The Hungarian prime minister also emphasized that Hungary
places much importance on the EU Eastern Partnership Project and when
chairing the EU in 2011, it will continue to consider the policy an
important priority. Sargsyan, for his part, stated that the EU Eastern
Partnership Project provides an opportunity to develop relations with
the EU and its separate countries and to promote a process of reform
in Armenia.

At Bajnai’s request, Sargsyan presented Armenia’s approaches on the
establishment process of Armenia-Turkey relations within reasonable
timeframes and without preconditions and on the current phase of
the Nagorno-Karabakh negotiation process. Bajnai emphasized that
peaceful settlement of problems and conflicts in the region, besides
establishing bilateral relations, will also change the international
community’s perception of the entire region, promoting stability,
development, sustainable peace, strengthening of partnership spirit
and mutual trust.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ 70% of New-York Times news items are materials of
other news agencies, Ukrainian Professor and communication technology
expert George Pocheptsov told a news conference in Yerevan. People
are no longer interested in papers, he said. "Newspapers are of no
interest for the generation of the 1980s-90s, and by 2020, televisions
will become obsolete too. With no TV, we’ll find ourselves in a kind
of obscure world," Professor stressed.

At that he noted that information agencies will be unable to protect
copyright since Internet appears out of legal domain. "Estonia is
searching for legal grounds for bringing Internet on legal domain
while Ukraine has attempted to register Internet publications,"
Pocheptsov stressed.

Ukrainian professor expressed his negative attitude to Neuro-linguistic
programming (NLP) as its effectiveness has not yet been proven by
concrete examples.

Professor George Pocheptsov is the author of more than 50 books on
the theory of information warfare and theory of communication. He has
been invited to Armenia by Head of Presidential Staff’s PR Department
and Armenian Public Relations Association (APRA).

IPhone Vs. Blackberry: New Developments In Armenia’s Telecommunicati

IPHONE VS. BLACKBERRY: NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN ARMENIA’S TELECOMMUNICATIONS MARKET

Tert

Armenia

The competition between telecommunications operators in Armenia in
providing mobile and internet services might expand into the cell
phone product market beginning as early as next year.

The level of permeability in Armenia’s mobile communications market
is 80%, forcing telecommunications operators to come up with new
solutions in retaining and attracting customers.

For instance, Armenia’s newest telecommunications operator, Orange
Armenia, announced that it will be the official supplier of the iPhone
in Armenia. This means that after some time, those phones will become
available for customers for a cheaper price in the marketplace,
of course on the condition that those individuals buying the phone
become their customer by signing onto their plans.

Already Orange Armenia has begun to sell mobile phones that are cheaper
than the market price to its customers. The company, it turns out,
has exclusive contracts with a number of mobile phone manufacturers.

It’s no surprise then that iPhone’s competitor, Blackberry, will be
represented by VivaCell-MTS in the Armenian market. MTS has already
begun to sell these smartphones to individual customers in the
Russian marketplace.

In Russia, for instance, MTS sells the Blackberry Curve 8520 smartphone
for around $440 USD — about $100 USD cheaper than the price offered by
(other) retailers. Customers who purchase the Blackberry Curve 8520
receive other free services provided by MTS.

Russia’s VimpelCom (ArmenTel’s sole proprietor) sells Blackberry
phones in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and it’s not entirely unlikely
that those will be offered in Armenia as well.

Thus, the competition in the telecommunications market in Armenia
could, quite soon, move to the retail sector. As for what effect this
will have on importers of these products, only time will tell.

John McCain: I Believe That A Genocide Was Committed Against Armenia

JOHN MCCAIN: I BELIEVE THAT A GENOCIDE WAS COMMITTED AGAINST ARMENIANS

PanARMENIAN.Net
11.11.2009 17:49 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Republican US Senator John McCain, in a recent
interview with the Georgian service of Voice of America said he
believed "ample documentation" exists proving that "Genocide had been
committed against the Armenian people."

"I believe that a genocide was committed against Armenians, and I
think there is ample documentation of that," McCain was quoted as
saying. "The Turkish and Armenian people and states cannot forget
the past. Especially Armenians cannot."

"Because of that," McCain said, he understood and agreed with Armenia’s
efforts to normalize relations with Turkey on a step-by-step basis. "I
support that view," he said.

"We are witnessing significant progress in the relations between
Turkey and Armenia," McCain added. For the first time, parties are
making steps towards the same direction."

McCain dodged the issue during his presidential campaign in 2008,
failing to properly characterize the crime as Genocide. The Arizona
Senator is running for re-election in the 2010 Senate race.

During the US Presidential Campaign, Senator McCain formally asked
for the support of Armenian American voters in an open letter. The
Arizona Senator praised the Armenian American contribution to American
society, and Armenia’s contribution to Coalition operations in Iraq
and NATO peacekeeping in Kosovo, but failed to outline his stands on
core Armenian American issues.

At the time, McCain remained silent on Nagorno Karabagh, the Turkish
and Azerbaijani blockades, U.S. aid to Armenia, and the broader issue
of U.S.-Armenia relations. He did, as he has done over the years,
echo the Bush Administration’s practice of employing euphemistic
language such as "terrible tragedy" to avoid mentioning the Armenian
Genocide by its proper name.

Senator McCain has, throughout his tenure in the Congress, largely
opposed or was passively indifferent to a broad array of Armenian
American issues. In October 2007, Senator McCain publicly opposed
Congressional recognition of the Armenian Genocide. In 1999, he voted
against restricting U.S. aid to Azerbaijan over its blockades and
other offensive uses of force against Armenia and Nagorno Karabagh. He
voted against Senator Bob Dole’s Armenian Genocide Resolution in 1990.

TURKEY SEEKS INTEGRATION TO MIDDLE EAST AND SOUTH CAUCASUS SIMULTANEOUSLY

PanARMENIAN.Net
11.11.2009 18:33 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkey is attempting to build new kind of relations
with neighboring states, and such ambitions are not restricted to South
Caucasus only. As successor of Ottoman Empire, Turkey has serious
problems with almost all neighbors, Caucasus Institute Director,
political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan told a news conference in
Yerevan, answering a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter’s question.

To resolve all those problems, Turkey is conducting a multi-vector
foreign policy, making statements "in favor of Azerbaijan on the one
hand, and in favor of Israel on the other." "Turkey seeks integration
to Middle East and South Caucasus simultaneously, that’s why it
is conducting similar policy in both regions," Iskandaryan said,
commenting upon processes in Turkish-Israeli relations.

TURKEY-ARMENIA DEAL TO BENEFIT AZERBAIJAN: EU ENVOY

AzerNews Weekly

Turkey-Armenia relations have reached a point beyond which there may be
a breakthrough, the European Union Special Representative for the South
Caucasus, Peter Semneby, has said, adding that the agreement recently
reached by Ankara and Yerevan would, in fact, benefit Azerbaijan.

Semneby welcomed what he described as ice-breaking in Turkey-Armenia
talks. He told Russia’s Kommersant newspaper that the anticipated
opening of the Turkish-Armenian border will be the first step toward
overcoming the abnormal situation in the region whereby three of
the lengthiest frontiers of the South Caucasus – the ones between
Turkey and Armenia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Russia and Georgia –
remain shut.

"This current situation is an obstacle to normal development of the
region," said Semneby.

After decades of hostility, Turkey and Armenia signed protocols to
establish diplomatic relations and reopen their borders in Zurich
on October 10. However, the documents require ratification in both
countries’ parliaments. Moreover, Ankara has ruled out their approval
in the Grand National Assembly and the border opening before progress
is made in the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict that Azerbaijan,
Turkey, ally, faces with Armenia, which has been occupying a part of
Azerbaijan’s territory since the early 1990s.

According to Semneby, though a challenging situation has emerged with
the approval of the Turkey-Armenia protocols, this would comply with
both countries’ interests, as well as those of Azerbaijan.

"I am confident that in the long term, this also meets the interests
of Azerbaijan, because it is also interested in the opening of borders
in the region," the EU official said.

Semneby noted that the brief war fought by Russia and Georgia in August
2008 has shown that the South Caucasus states are vulnerable, and
this vulnerability could be eliminated only by solving the outstanding
problems. He also voiced confidence that Armenian leaders are of the
same opinion.

"The status quo on Garabagh does not meet Armenia’s interests, and
it cannot remain undefined forever," Semneby said.

According to him, mutual confidence should be strengthened in the
South Caucasus to surmount the challenges, which, in fact, requires
vigorous effort by third parties, such as the EU or Russia.

Semneby also said Russia’s recognition of Georgia’s rebel South
Ossetia and Abkhazia regions had set forth a precedent complicating
settlement of the Garabagh conflict.

"[But] the link between these conflicts should not be embellished.

Certainly, we deem Russia’s recognizing these territories as
problematic and unacceptable, and difficult discussions on the issue,
including those with Russia, are still ahead," Semneby said, adding
that the EU and Moscow share common priorities in other areas, and
differences over Georgia should not pose roadblocks to efforts aiming
to resolve other conflicts.*

SENATOR MCCAIN CLAIMS ‘ARMENIAN GENOCIDE’

AzerNews Weekly
Nov 10 2009

US Senator John McCain, a former presidential candidate, reportedly
claims Turkey committed genocide against Armenians during World War
I and that this is proven with documents.

Armenians say Ottoman Turks killed 1.5 million people in 1915,
a claim strenuously denied by the modern Turkish state.

In an interview with Voice of America, McCain said he supports the
process of rapprochement between Turkey and Armenia.

McCain welcomed progress that has been achieved in Turkey-Armenia
reconciliation. "For the first time, the parties are making steps in
the same direction."

"On the other hand, the Turkish and Armenian people and states cannot
forget their past. Especially Armenians can’t. Because of that they
consider that they should develop the relations with Turkey step by
step," the senator said, adding that he favors this approach.

Senator McCain, who stood in the presidential elections on November 4,
2008 as a nominee representing the Republican Party, lost to his rival
from the Democratic Party Barack Obama. While on the campaign trail,
he was said to have vehemently rejected the "genocide" claims. The
Atlantic Monthly magazine then reported that McCain was committed to
a firm stance on the issue and has repeatedly opposed the allegations.

As for Obama, despite pledging during his pre-election campaign to
recognize the "genocide", he did not deliver on the promise after
being elected president.*
