/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Opening of Armenia -Turkey border will introduce
drastic changes in the region, Haykazun Alvrtsyan, Director of the
Western Armenians’ Studies Center told a news conference in Yerevan.

"After successful RA-Turkey rapprochement process and border opening,
opening of Armenia-Azerbaijan border will become the next western
initiative, promoting implementation of western communication projects
in the region. Otherwise, opening of border with Turkey would be
pointless," Haykazun Alvrtsyan said.

According to him, future of Armenia and NKR should not be risked
for communication advantages’ sake. "I hope our government realizes
the threats of current process with Turkey and will be capable of
resisting it," Haykazun Alvrtsyan noted, adding that the status quo
will be reestablished unless Armenian -Turkish border is opened.

WASHINGTON, DC – Having completed a full week of grassroots
activities urging U.S. Senate support for Armenian Genocide
affirmation, the Armenian National Committee of America’s (ANCA)
"Countdown to Erdogan" campaign, now in its second week, will be
focusing the need for the U.S. House of Representatives to move
quickly to adopt the Armenian Genocide Resolution, H.Res.252.

"Countdown to Erdogan provides Armenian Americans from across the
country a unique chance to take part in a broad range of civic
advocacy activities, meaningfully strengthening the capacity of our
community, as we increase the moral and political pressure for a
truthful and just stand by our government on the Armenian
Genocide," said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian.

A New Action Item Each Day:

Starting on Monday, November 16th, Week 2 of the "Countdown to
Erdogan" campaign began with an online focus on the ANCA YouTube
channel – and continues on Tuesday
and Wednesday with email and call-in days directed at the House of
Representatives. Daily action will continue into Thursday, with a
focus on the Darfur Genocide, and Friday, with activities to
strengthen the Armenian American community’s social networking. The
weekend will feature a field activity on Saturday and community and
family connection opportunities on Sunday. All activities are aimed
at educating and inspiring President Obama, on December 7th, to
tell the visiting Prime Minister of Turkey that American stands for
a truthful and just resolution of the Armenian Genocide.

Social Networking: Twitter Challenge Winners to be Announced on
Friday, November 20th.

On Friday, November 13th, the ANCA announced the Twitter Challenge,
urging activists to write a "tweet" in 140 characters or less,
explaining why the U.S. should recognize the Armenian Genocide. The
best entries will be posted on the ANCA website, the ANCA Facebook

ST. GEORGE CHURCH OF WAUKEGAN, IL, MARKS 50 YEARS

Last month, parishioners at St. George Armenian Church marked the 50th
anniversary of the parish’s establishment with the ordination of young
acolytes and a banquet, where speakers reflected on the past five decades
and looked forward to a new chapter of community building at the Waukegan,
IL parish.

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church
of America (Eastern), visited St. George Church on the weekend of October 24
and 25. The anniversary celebration began on Saturday evening as the Primate
ordained four young parishioners as acolytes: Rayen and Steve Kelekian, Alex
Dayenian, and Avet Markarian.

During the ordination service, parishioners also received a surprise visit
from the Rev. Fr. Mardiros Chevian, dean of St. Vartan Cathedral in New
York, who served as the parish’s deacon-in-charge some 30 years ago.

"The occasion gave me the opportunity to thank the community for helping me
in my growth and development as a priest of the Armenian Church," Fr.
Chevian said.

He served at St. George Church for three years shortly after completing two
years of study at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin in 1978. "The parish
was very nurturing and allowed me to develop my skills and put them to use,"
Fr. Chevian added.

"This is a parish with a long tradition of service, and strong memories of
its past," Archbishop Barsamian said. "Its future is also bright, as shown
by the young souls ordained this weekend."

Following the ordination service, the Primate performed the Home Blessing
ceremony and a kheyma dinner was served in the church hall. The meal of raw,
seasoned ground beef and bulgur is a longstanding tradition at the church,
where it was once served on a weekly basis. "A lot of people enjoy the
kheyma the way it is prepared here," said parish council chair Nishan
Paparigian.

Leadership from within

On Sunday, Archbishop Barsamian celebrated the Divine Liturgy. In the
afternoon, 160 people gathered for a banquet at the nearby Glen Flora
Country Club, where they were greeted with a multimedia presentation of old
photographs and footage documenting various events at St. George Church over
the past five decades.

Guest speaker Rachel Goshgarian, Ph.D., who grew up in the St. George Church
parish and now serves as the director of the Diocese’s Krikor and Clara
Zohrab Information Center, reflected on the parish’s many achievements since
its establishment in 1959.

"Even though Armenians were a part of the huge immigrant wave that entered
the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, even though
they were but a sliver of the immigrant population here in Waukegan, by the
1960s the Armenian community had a church in Waukegan and the mayor of
Waukegan was an Armenian," she said.

Goshgarian went on to speak about the community’s commitment to building a
church in the late 1950s, and recalled how the parish’s warmth and guidance
shaped her own experiences growing up at St. George Church.

"The lessons I learned here, within the four walls of St. George Armenian
Church, have helped me at every stage in my life, both within the Armenian
community and outside of it," she said.

Goshgarian added that "leadership in our church has to come from within,"
and stressed the importance of carrying forward the legacy handed down by
the parish’s founders. "I look around this room today and I see faces that
will lead this church into the 21st century," she said. "I see faces that
will teach steadfastness, modesty, and service to the younger generations."

Also during the celebration, Archbishop Barsamian announced that the Rev.
Fr. Paren Galstyan, who was interning at St. George Church, would become its
interim pastor.

"Having experienced the love and warm embrace of many parishioners during my
first months in the community, I feel especially privileged and grateful to
have the opportunity to serve the St. George parish, and share the happiness
of this momentous anniversary," Fr. Galstyan wrote in a letter published in
the 50th anniversary booklet.

During his internship at the parish, he helped train the young men ordained
by the Primate that weekend. Thanks to the efforts of Fr. Galstyan and Dn.
David Ohanian, the four acolytes learned the basics of serving on the altar
of the Armenian Church, noted parish council chair Nishan Paparigian.

Fr. Chevian recalled his time at St. George Church, emphasizing how the
small but strong community helped him develop his ministry. He said he was
pleased to "see children of those years now in leadership positions in the
Waukegan parish or on other parish and Diocesan levels."

Maestro Khoren Mekanejian, coordinator of Music Ministry at the Diocese, the
Very Rev. Fr. Aren Jebejian, and Mrs. Zaghik Kelekian performed a selection
of Armenian songs.

Later in the afternoon, eight parishioners received the "St. Vartan" award
for their years of devoted service: Steve Dayenian, Diane Hagopian, Sophie
Mardoian, Lisa Markarian, David Ohanian, Ana Paparigian, Nishan Paparigian,
and Martin V. Simonian.

The 50th anniversary celebration was chaired by Diane Hagopian, who also
co-chaired the banquet with Sophie Mardoian. Parishioners from nearby
churches attended the event, including Diocesan Council chair Oscar Tatosian
and member Paul Mardoian (son of the aforementioned Sophie Mardoian) who
grew up in the parish.

Also during the weekend, Maestro Mekanejian led a deacons training workshop
and a choir workshop for Midwest choir members and organists.

Small but proud

Armenians began settling in the Waukegan area in the early 1900s, where they
found work at the Washburn-Moen wire mill, which would later become the
American Steel and Wire Company.

In those years, visiting clergy celebrated the Divine Liturgy and conducted
other services at the Christ Episcopal Church. With the establishment of a
sizeable ACYOA chapter following World War II, plans were underway to build
a house of worship. In 1956, the ACYOA and the parish council jointly
purchased a club house, where various parish organizations met and held
events.

In December 1957, Diocesan Primate Archbishop Mampre Calfayan consecrated
the grounds on which a new church would be built. Nearly two years later, on
September 27, 1959, the succeeding Primate, Archbishop Sion Manoogian,
consecrated St. George Armenian Church. The sanctuary was named in memory of
Kevork Simonian, the late brother of Mr. Vahan Simonian, who served as the
godfather of the new church.

The Rev. Fr. Diran Papazian served the parish in the first months following
the church’s consecration. In March 1960, the Rev. Fr. Arsen Barsamian
became the first full-time pastor of St. George Church.

Today the community remains small, but it prides itself on church members
who are energized and devoted to preserving the Armenian Christian heritage.
The parish runs a Sunday School and a training program for young altar
servers.

Looking back on last month’s celebration, Nishan Paparigian said the event
was very much a community affair, where participants felt part of a larger
effort to uphold and carry forth the parish mission. "It was a beautiful
day," he said.

2011 UEFA . U-21 Mkhitaryan proves Armenia’s hero

Mkhitaryan proves Armenia’s heroTuesday 17 November 2009

Armenia secured their first win in 2011 UEFA European Under-21
Championship qualifying thanks to Henrik Mkhitaryan’s hat-trick
against the Republic of Ireland.
Mkhitaryan feat
Both these sides had yet to taste victory in Group 2, although Ireland
had
drawn four of five games and Armenia just the one. However, a depleted
Republic team were breached by Mkhitaryan on the half-hour and he
added a second on 61 minutes. Cillian Sheridan pulled one back, only
for Hovhannes Goharyan’s fine goal to be followed by a Mkhitaryan
penalty.
Spirits raised
There had been frustration for both countries on Saturday when Armenia
conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to Estonia, and Ireland were
similarly levelled late on in Georgia, in 1-1 draws. Yet Armenian
spirits were raised here when Mkhitaryan danced past three defenders
and his superb shot opened the scoring.
Victory sealed
Just past the hour, the 20-year-old from Ukrainian club FC Metalurh
Donetsk applied a powerful finish to Edgar Malakyan’s cross, but four
minutes later Sheridan gave Ireland hope by heading in James O’Shea’s
centre. With a quarter-hour to go Goharyan struck from 20 metres to
make it 3-1 and after Malakyan was felled in the box, Mkhitaryan
completed his treble. Armenia duly moved ahead of their visitors and
into fifth place on head-to-head record, before the sides’ rematch in
Ireland on 2 March.

Member Of Oligarchy Club

MEMBER OF OLIGARCHY CLUB

"Aravot" daily reports the Prime Minister of Armenia joined the
Republican Party. The information was confirmed by the Republican
press speaker Eduard Sharmazanov who noted that the event took place
a couple of days ago.

The press has recently written that the Republican Party, especially
its oligarchic wing is very much dissatisfied with the Prime Minister.

The press wrote also that the Prime Minister was possible to be
dismissed next spring when the crisis will be more felt in the
Armenian socio-economic sphere. The coalition member parties are
also discontent with the Prime Minister, as well as the ARF which
left the coalition. And in particular, the major business.

Tigran Sargsyan became a Republican, or as the press baptized him
"member of the oligarchic club". The same oligarchs who the Prime
Minister said were the target of the economic course of the government
of this year. They had to pay taxes, come out of shadow and not to
create obstacles for the formation of free competitive atmosphere. A
thing that international structures demand altogether with which the
Prime Minister agreed.

Apparently, this worried the Armenian oligarchic system. Serge
Sargsyan found a solution particular to him – the Prime Minister
becomes a member of the oligarchic club which on one hand calms this
class down, on the other hand, it becomes a little inconvenient to
dismiss a partner. At the same time, those interested structures will
be satisfied.

The joining of the Prime Minister to the Republican Party confirms
the affirmations that there will not be any reform in the current
governmental system, in other words, there will not be even an
imitation of it. The maximum that can be is the complete transition of
the policy to the backstage, redistribution of property, formation of
new oligarchs instead of the old ones and other such kind of phenomena.

Who Are The Armenians To Yield Lands?

WHO ARE THE ARMENIANS TO YIELD LANDS?

Lragir

Serge Sargsyan is surrounded by people a part of which we see and the
other part no, who just want "to drift with the current". The author of
this statement is the political scientist Igor Muradyan. He gave this
answer in response to the question on the initiative policy of Serge
Sargsyan. According to Igor Muradyan, he does not see any initiative,
and visits and statement are not initiatives.

Igor Muradyan stated he has lately been to a number of European
countries and met with circles of experts who said to have the
impression that Serge Sargsyan is ready and aims to yield the
territories. Igor Muradyan says this readiness seems surprising to
him. He notes no geopolitical centre demands territories from us
and surprisingly here people want to yield them. "Why do they want
to do that? It is incomprehensible," says Igor Muradyan and adds,
"it is clear, they have stolen for years and now they want to keep
what they stole". "That is all", says the political scientist.

At the same time, Igor Muradyan says ironically, "who are the Armenians
to yield or not to yield territories". According to him, many need the
current status-quo. Igor Muradyan means the super powers when saying
that the status-quo stems from the interests of all the world force
centers. According to him, his hope is on the geopolitical situations
otherwise everything is lost.

In the opinion of the member of the Central office of the Armenian
National Congress Levon Zurabyan, the prime minister’s joining the
Republican Party is a stage the mafia government must pass through.

According to him, Tigran Sargsyan deserves congratulations on the
occasion of becoming a part of the mafia.
