WORLD’S TOP UNIVERSITIES: UK AND US ONCE AGAIN ON TOP

The British Times Higher Education journal published the rankings
of the world’s top universities, QS World University Rankings 2009,
for the sixth time.

According to tradition, this year, too, only American and British
universities are in the top ten. Harvard University remains the leader
in the rankings. This year Cambridge University ousted Yale from the
second to third place.

University College London is the fourth, instead of the U.K.’s
famous Oxford University, which tied in fifth place with Imperial
College London.

The American Princeton University returned to the top ten this year. It
is in the 8th place instead of last year’s 12th.

American universities occupy the other places of the top
ten. University of Chicago is in the 7th place, Massachusetts Institute
of Technology is in the 9th, California Institute of Technology is
in the 10th place, which was the fifth last year.

The Times Higher Education is guided by six criteria in its ranking:

1. academic peer review 2. employer review 3. faculty student ratio
4. citations per faculty 5. international staff 6. international
students

The Top 10 List, once again, is

1. Harvard University 2. University of Cambridge 3. Yale University
4. University College London 5. Imperial College London University
of Oxford 6. University of Chicago 7. Princeton University
8. Massachusetts Institute of Technology 9. California Institute
of Technology
