ANKARA ON ALARM FOR BLACK WEDNESDAY; TRAFFIC OF MESSAGES TO WASHINGTON

Ankara is on alarm and is campaigning to defeat a draft Armenian
resolution that will be voted on in the Foreign Relations Committee
of the U.S. House of Representatives tomorrow, Wednesday, October 10.

According to most political experts, the adoption of such a resolution
in the U.S. House of Representatives would be a serious blow to
Turkish-U.S. relations.

Speaker of the Turkish Parliament Koksal Toptan sent a letter to the
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi – who supports the Armenian Resolution –
saying that this resolution would hurt relations between Turkey and
the U.S. and block efforts to normalize Armenian-Turkish relations.

"Dynamics that would be triggered by reactions of the Turkish public,
might not be easy to keep under control," Toptan wrote.

Similar letters of warning have been sent by the Turkish Defense
Minister Vecdi Gonul to the U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates,
and most recently by the Turkish President Abdullah Gul to President
Bush. Gul in his letter has also thanked Mr. Bush for his efforts on
this issue.
