RA Police carry out a project for "specification" of voting lists on
the eve of parliamentary elections in the country.

program "Reformation of Election Processes and the Electoral
Administration" in Armenia since October 1, 2005, under financial
assistance of USAID. The Program is aimed at assisting in reformation
of the country’s election system. The main directions of the Program
are the registration of voters, their information and the electoral
administration. The key task of the Project is assistance in compiling
the most complete and objective register of the domestic voters,
Chedomir Flego noted.

In his turn, the U.S. Charge d’Affairs to Armenia Anthony Godfrey

LEGISLATION CONDEMNING DINK MURDER TO BE CONSIDERED IN U.S. SENATE ON MARCH 6

Yerkir
05.03.2007 13:00

YEREVAN (YERKIR) – The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee is set
to consider legislation, authored by the panel’s chairman Joe Biden
(D-DE), condemning the murder of Hrant Dink, reported the Armenian
National Committee of America (ANCA).

The resolution, S.Res.65, specifically mentions that Hrant Dink "was
prosecuted under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code for speaking
about the Armenian Genocide," and urges the Turkish government to
repeal this anti-free speech law.

It will be "marked up" by the Committee on Tuesday, March 6th at 2:15
p.m. ANCA activists in the 21 states with Senators on the Committee
are encouraging support for S.Res.65 through phone calls, faxes, and
meetings. They are also reminding the Senate offices that Hrant Dink’s
brutal murder is a wake up call for the U.S. Senate to pass legislation
formally recognizing and commemorating the Armenian Genocide.

Hrant Dink, editor of the bilingual Armenian/Turkish "Agos" newspaper,
was gunned down outside his office in Istanbul on January 19th –
sparking worldwide protests and renewed scrutiny of Turkey’s repression
of free speech and international campaign of Armenian Genocide denial.

Writing The Right: What’s In An Armenian Name?

WRITING THE RIGHT: WHAT’S IN AN ARMENIAN NAME?
By Ani Amirkhanian

Glendale News Press
March 5 2007

When my cousin announced she was going to give her adopted son an
Armenian name that dates back centuries, every member of her immediate
and extended family wondered what she was thinking.

She consulted an Armenian book of names and found the name Hrad,
pronounced hu-rod. None of us had ever heard of the name.

When she settled on the name many expressed concern as to how
non-Armenians would be able to pronounce her son’s name. That didn’t
seem to matter to her.

When her second child was born, she chose an even more obscure and
difficult Armenian name. She picked the name Goryune, pronounced
gor-e-yoon, for her son. The name literally means "cub" or, more
specifically, "lion cub." It is not a common name today and it goes
back centuries.

Once again, everybody asked her how others would be able to remember,
let alone pronounce, the child’s name.

So far, there have been no problems with any of the names. Her eldest,
6-year-old Hrad, attends a private Armenian school where academic
instruction is primarily in Armenian, while 1-year-old Goryune is
still a ways from starting school.

But everyone in the family is still wondering how others in our
culturally diverse community will respond to the names.

My cousin refused to give her children names that are convenient
for the majority. Although some Armenian parents are still giving
their children Armenian names, many are choosing American or other
non-Armenian names. advertisement

Gone are the days when one out of four boys’ were named Armen or Ara
– two very typical Armenian names. Even the popular girls’ names,
Ani and Anahid, are becoming a thing of the past.

More and more Armenian parents are choosing names like Brian,
Christopher, Lisa, Erin, Brandon and Roderick

A non-Armenian name combined with a long, 13-letter traditional
Armenian last name with an "ian" or "yan" suffix is the end result.

Certain names are also chosen because they are popular in society.

Back in the ’80s in Glendale, the two most common names among Armenian
girls were Jennifer and Tiffany.

My cousin chose the names that she did for her two children not
because they are uncommon or unique.

She picked them because she wanted her children to be identified as
Armenian and be proud of who they are.

That isn’t to say that parents who don’t choose Armenian names for
their children don’t want them to identify or to be proud of their
culture.

But for many parents, names are chosen because they are popular or
sound pretty, not because they necessarily distinguish a culture or
have a significant meaning.

Whatever the reason for birth names, last names are a clear indication
of cultural identity and nationality.

Last names, especially for Armenians, are a dead giveaway.

Turkish Politician To Stand Trial In Switzerland For Denying Armenia

TURKISH POLITICIAN TO STAND TRIAL IN SWITZERLAND FOR DENYING ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

AP Worldstream
Mar 05, 2007

A Turkish politician due to stand trial for allegedly breaking
Switzerland’s anti-racism laws said he will produce documents proving
that the mass killings of Armenians in the early 20th century were
"regrettable reciprocal massacres," but not genocide, according to
an interview published Monday.

Dogu Perincek, the leader of the Turkish Workers’ Party, said he had
obtained Russian documents proving the killings by Turks between 1915
and 1918 were the result of ethnic fighting that also claimed Turkish
victims, according to the interview in daily Le Matin.

The case will test whether it is a violation of Switzerland’s
anti-racism law to deny that the Turks committed genocide in the 1915
killings of up to 1.5 million Armenians.

The Swiss parliament’s lower house voted in 2003 to recognize the
slayings as genocide, but the resolution was nonbinding. Members of
the governing Cabinet have expressed concerns about the resolution’s
impact on relations with Turkey.

Perincek was charged with breaking the law after repeatedly denying
the genocide during a visit to Switzerland in 2005, and is due to
appear in a Lausanne court Tuesday.

He could face up to three years in prison and an unspecified fine
if convicted.

The law was "the result of deeply rooted anti-Turkish prejudice,"
Perincek said, according to Le Matin, adding that he hoped to end the
"witch hunt" against him. The law has also been applied to Holocaust
denial.

"Here (in Switzerland) stating your opinion is a punishable act,"
Perincek was quoted as saying.

Descendants of Armenians who survived and fled abroad have been
lobbying Western countries to label the killings genocide.

In January, a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers introduced a bill
to this effect in Congress. The bill is opposed by the White House
out of concern it could damage relations with Turkey, a vital Muslim
ally and NATO member.

Last October, the French parliament passed a bill making it a crime
to deny the killings were genocide. The bill, which still requires
approval from the French Senate and President Jacques Chirac, stands
in direct contrast with a Turkish law that punishes those who use
the term genocide to describe the deaths.

Turkish groups in Switzerland are planning demonstrations in support
of Perincek, whose hearing in a police court is scheduled to last
two days. Any decision can appealed to the country’s supreme court.
