YUSHENKO IS AGAINST REMEMBERING ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IN CRIMEA
WAC Condemns Kiev Authorities
Chairman of the World Armenian Congress, Ara Abrahamian, condemned
Ukrainian authorities in Kiev who opposed the decision of the Crimean
parliament to hold remembrance day of the Armenian Genocide in
1915. Abrahamian said that Kiev’s negative response to the Crimean
parliament to remember the Armenian Genocide reveals immaturity of
the Ukrainian authorities and shows that the country is not ready to
join the democratic states.
The Supreme Rada of Crimea, urged by head of the Russian Congress of
Crimea Sergey Shuvaynikov, declared April 24 to be the remembrance
day of the Armenian Genocide. The Ukrainian authorities have not been
making their stance known for 1 month.
In an interview to daily Azg Muscovite political analyst
Andranik Mihranian indicated 2 moments explaining Kiev’s position:
President Yushenko paid an official visit to Ankara and the Turkish
influence here is obvious, secondly, there is the Azeri factor as
Ukraine is largely dependent on Azerbaijan as regards to energy
carriers. Mihranian reminded of the United States’ example: more
than 3 dozens of US states have recognized the Armenian Genocide
but the executive power of the country does not interfere and try to
apply pressure.

Organization in cooperation with the RA Ministry of Healthcare
is organizing the second seminar “Behind the Numbers” with the
participation of Albania, Armenia, former Yugoslav states, Romania,
Russia, Turkey and Turkmenistan. The seminar will represent different
approaches to the studies of maternal deaths and complexities of
pregnancy as well as will lend support to groups of participating
countries to discuss these issues on national level.
The following are the references of “Behind the Numbers”:
1. It’s possible to avert maternal deaths even in countries with
limited resources but it demands providing correct information for
the projects to build on.
2. Each case of maternal death or a complexity threatening the life
has its prehistory that may provide information for the problem’s
practical solution.
3. Conclusions made up from these studies are the main guarantee
of success.

Prisons in the focus of government attention

PRISONS IN THE FOCUS OF GOVERNMENT ATTENTION
Armenpress
YEREVAN, JUNE 27, ARMENPRESS: Head of a justice ministry department
supervising Armenian correction facilities said the prisons and their
conditions were in the focus of constant government attention. “If
the government keeps on the rate of funding unchanged the system will
mark a tangible progress in next 7-8 years,’ the department head,
Samvel Hovhanesian, said.
He said the system’s improvement depends on several factors, such as
change of the society’s perception of prisons, higher level of legal
awareness and knowledge, the inmates’ desire to protect their rights,
but added, however, that “we are going now to another extremity when
by defending the convicts’ rights we violate the prison personnel’s
rights.”
He then said the ministry is working to secure the inmates with jobs
and to this end seeks contracts with businessmen. He also said low
wages (more than $100) keep people away from the system. “We have now
200 vacancies,” he said, adding that the job is not attractive for
people, mainly because of dilapidated facilities. Contrary to this,
he said, the renovated Vardashen prison, that almost complies with
many of western standards, has no vacancies. He also praised the work
of non-governmental organizations which seek to track down and raise
the inmates’ problems, saying it helps them to assess these problems
and seek their solution.
