Aznavour Call on Turk Youth To Form Personal Understanding of Events

AZNAVOUR CALLS ON TURKISH YOUTH TO FORM PERSONAL IDEA CONCERNING
ISSUES OF ARMENIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS
ISTAMBUL, JUNE 8, NOYAN TAPAN. Young people in Turkey should be left
free in order that they interprete issues concerning the
Armenian-Turkish relations themselves. French Armenian world famous
singer Charles Aznavour stated this in an interview given to the
Turkish “Radical” newspaper which was published in the June 7 issue,
on the occasion of Aznavour’s autobiographical book’s being published
in Turkish (“Aras” publishing house). When the newspaper correspondent
reminded that Aznavour has a wonderful poem “Letter to My Turkish
Friend,” the world famous singer mentioned that he really had a dear
Turkish friend, and the letter was addressed to that friend but, in
reality, it is addressed to the whole Turkish poeple. “When the
Genocide happened Turks fostered Armenian orphans. If 50 thousand
orphans were fostered from a half and a million of Armenians it is not
a small number. It means that irrespective of you or us, there is an
Armenian reality in Turkey. Every time, when Turk young people visit
me I tell them. “Today, listen neither to what Turks say nor to what
Armenians say. Use your mind, form your personal idea. Why were I and
my Turk friend so close with one another. He took my mother to all
those places where she spent her youth. He used to call my mother
“mamy.” Why? Because he has studied and was aware. I propose Turk
youth to study, research. As the burder on the shoulders is very
heavy. We do not have a burder on our shoulders but you do have. The
burder should be picked up in order young people to be free,”
Aznavour, particularly, said. The world famous singer mentioned that
50 years ago he visited Turkey twice and had a concert. He would like
to visit Turkey again, but with a condition, that he will be
officially invited by the Turkish state. He got concert invitations
many times but wants to get a state invitation. The Istambul “Marmara”
daily reminds that assaults against Aznavour first happened in Turkey
when he wrote the song “They Fell” dedicated to the 1915 Armenian
Genocide. And at present. his role in Atom Egoyan’s “Ararat” film
became a reason that he is called “Turk’s enemy.”

UAE Armenians: Abu Dhabi Armenian School Final Celebration 2005

Azad-Hye, United Arab Emirates
June 8 2005
UAE Armenians: Abu Dhabi Armenian School Final Celebration 2005
AZAD-HYE: On the 13th May 2005 the Armenians of Abu Dhabi gathered in
`The Club’ to mark the end of the school year.
During the past years this has been an opportunity for the largest
gathering of Armenians in Abu Dhabi, besides the annual Ball.
The Director of the School, Mrs. Tamar Der Ohannesian, welcomed the
guests, among them the Ambassador of Armenia (Dr. Arshak Poladian),
the pastor of the UAE Armenians (Der Aram Deyirmenjian), members of
the Council (headed by Vahe Toukhmanian) and numerous friends and
family.
It has been customary to perform a school play with the participation
of all the students of the school and their teachers. The play
usually involves all kinds of expressive art forms, such as songs,
dances, poems, paintings, etc.
There was a slideshow about the student activities and events during
the year, followed by a show by the pupils of different classes:
The kindergarten pupils danced on the rhythm of a song called “Come
to my home”. The students of the higher grades presented three
dances, entering into the stage with the known patriotic song
“Kedashen” (devoted to the struggeling town in Artsakh). One of the
dance carried the rhythmic style of composer Ara Gevorgian.
A student recited `For my sweet Armenia’ by famous poet Yeghishe
Charents.
All the other classes performed enthusiastic dances tailored on
modernized rhythms of known Armenian melodies.
There was even a ballet performance by Kindergarten students (The
Swan Lake).
The students of the fifth grade came on stage with patriotic chants,
and proceeded to perform a modern dance set to the music of Ara
Gevorgian.
`The girls of Yerevan’ pop song of Tata was the musical background of
an original dance performed by KG2 students. (click READ MORE)
The students of the eight grade took the role of the presenters or
masters of the ceremony.
5 pupils graduated from the kindergarten.
Der Aram highly appreciated the efforts of the teachers and mentioned
that without the school it would have been difficult to keep the
Armenian language as a live means of communication among the younger
generation.
Mr. Vahe Toukhmanian, chairman of the Council of the Armenian
Community, awarded gifts to the teachers representing the Armenian
alphabet on framed golden plates, symbolizing the 1600th anniversary
of the invention of the Armenian alphabet by Saint Mesrob Mashdots.
It is worth mentioning that the school had published a volume called
`Our School Year’ in which detailed account of the school life and
students achievements, as well as many contributions from the
students were recorded in a presentable and memorable way, along with
photos and comments.

$10 million. It is currently planning and will be implementing an
initial $4 million wellbore reworking program expected to be carried

The Beaver River Field
The Beaver River Field is a natural gas field located 150 km
northwest of Fort Nelson, British Columbia and is adjacent to the
Fort Liard area of the southern Northwest Territories where large gas
discoveries by Chevron Canada and Encana Corporation have confirmed
the region’s natural gas potential. The Beaver River Field is tied
into the Duke Energy Gas Transmission Pipeline and has been
historically estimated to contain 1.5 Tcf to 3.0 Tcf of original gas
in place (OGIP) with a recovery factor of 10% to 20%. Based on
re-processed 3D Seismic and other data, a new field interpretation
has now recognized that there are two horizons containing gas: the
shallow Mattson sands and the deeper Nahanni formation. The Mattson
sands contains 6 to 10 sandstone zones, each of which have the
potential to host gas reserves.

Lincy Project Discontinued Because of US Gov’t Interference – Survey

LINCY PROJECT DISCONTINUED BECAUSE OF US GOVERNMENT’S INTERFERENCE,
MOST OF RESPONDENTS OF NT’S SURVEY CONSIDER
YEREVAN, JUNE 7, NOYAN TAPAN. Though it was formerly announced that in
case of the successful realization of the first stage of Lincy project
the project will continue no reasonable explanation to the fact why
the project was stopped has been given by now. To recap, at the first
stage of the project that ended in 2003, unprecedented work amounting
to nearly 200 mln dollars on repairs of roads and cultural entities
was done in Armenia. Multi-millionaire Kerk Kerkorian having financed
the project expressed satisfaction with the results of this work
during his recent visit to Armenia and at the same time didn’t give a
concrete answer to the question, if the project will continue. From
May 27 through June 3 Noyan Tapan held a survey on its Internet site
suggesting answering the question, what is the fact discontinuation of
the work on the Lincy project is conditioned by. 6 respondents
consider that this is conditioned by change of Kerkorian’s personal
plans, 9 respondents consider that this is conditioned by
unsatisfactory results of the project’s first stage. 10 respondents
explain this by personal relations of the multi-millionaire and RA
leadership and most of the respondents, 22, explain this by the
interference of the US government.

expressed willingness to distribute property in Artsakh and we fulfil
their wish,” Iranian Armenian benefactor Levon Aharonian, fund’s
Chairman, mentioned. In total nearly 8.5 thousand desks will be
distributed to schools with maximum 120 pupils for 17215 pupils. The

“IZMIRLYAN-EURASIA” UNIVERSAL CREDIT ORGANIZATION CONFIRMED 41 CREDIT
PROGRAMS ON $2.3 MLN
YEREVAN, JUNE 8. ARMINFO. The “Izmirlyan-Eurasia” Universal Credit
Organization (UCO) established in March, 2004 and become the successor
of the similar Fund for crediting small and middle-size business in
Armenia since 1995, has already confirmed 41 credit programs worth a
total $2.3 mln.
The UCO executive director Zakar Boyajyan informed today at the
opening ceremony that the re-registration of the Fund into the UCO was
imposed with both the change of country’s legislation and the wish of
its founders – the “Izmirlyan” private Swiss Fund and the “Eurasia”
American State Fund – to continue a successful credit activity on
developing small and middle-size entrepreneurship in Armenia. He
informed that 275 new work places were created in Armenia owing to the
UCO credits by the end of May. Credits are given at 15% annual profits
on at most 4 years.
The UCO finances the production, service and agriculture spheres not
crediting trade organizations. $1.158 mln were directed to financing
capital outlays, 41.144 mln- to replenishment of circulating
assets. 32 new requests for financing business worth a total $1.6 mln
are in the UCO portfolio at present. According to Boyajyan, 35% of
given credits concerned the sphere of foodstuff processing, 23% –
service, 21% – consumer goods production, 10% – health-care, 5.4% –
manufactured goods production and 4.5% – agriculture. 30% (or
$700.000) of $2.3 mln credit resources were given to the Yerevan
enterprises, $395.000 – to enterprises of Shirak, $295.000 – to Lori,
$270.000 – to Aragatsotn, $200.000 – to Armavir, and $155.000 – to
Syunik regions. Enterprises in the rest regions received credits on
less than $100.000.
President of Armenia’s CB Tigran Sargssyan highly appreciated the
cooperation of both funds within the UCO framework. He emphasized that
credit programs are being implemented actively in country’s regions
need for the development of the serious business structures and the
creation of work places.
To note, 296 credits worth a total 10.5 mln have been given to small
and middle-size business enterprises (2.219 new work places were
created) during 9 years within the framework of the former
“Izmirlyan-Eurasia” Program, including, due to the additional means of
both the USAID and the “Lincy” Foundation.

KARABAKHIAN ETHNOGRAPHER ANSWERS TO AZERI JOURNALIST

KARABAKHIAN ETHNOGRAPHER ANSWERS TO AZERI JOURNALIST
STEPANAKERT, JUNE 8. ARMINFO. “I think, our ancestors acted rightly
using in epitaphs phrases which help us today to answer many questions
and to prove both your wrongfulness and deliberate distortion of all
those created by Armenians-Karabakhians”, stated a Karabakhian
ethnographer Hrachik Harutyunyan commenting on an article in “The real
Azerbaijan” newspaper, the author of which condemns Karabakhian
authorities in “changing the names of overwhelming quantity of NKR
villages, particularly, town Shushi”.
“A am forced to ask both you and your authorities the same question:
what was the necessity and what aim purposed the Azeri side when
changed the Armenian ending of the primordial Armenian town Shushi
from “i” to “a”? I would like to note that names of tens of Armenian
villages in Karabakh were changed to Azeri manner by the same method”,
Harutyunyan said.

KLO Demanded to Turn Vladimir Kazimirov Out of Azerbaijan

MEMBERS OF KARABAKH LIBERATION ORGANIZATION DEMANDED TO TURN VLADIMIR
KAZIMIROV OUT OF AZERBAIJAN
BAKU, JUNE 8. ARMINFO-TURAN. International seminar entitled
“Azerbaijan’s Geopolitical Importance” has opened today in Baku with a
scandal. Representatives of Karabakh Liberation Organization demanded
that Vladimir Kazimirov, former MG co-chairman, should leave the hall.
“The man, who does not recognize Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity,
cannot stay here,” said Firudin Jalilov, deputy chairman of
Organization. But participants have proposed to give Kazimirov
permission to speak and express his position in a civilized form. The
tension has been temporary relieved, but the Organization’s members
are waiting for Kazimirov’s speech in the International Press Club,
where the seminar is taking place, ready to take some steps.
Novruz Mamedov, head of presidential administration’s international
relations department, evaded the main topic and said that Azerbaijan
is a democratic country and authorities take every effort to conduct
democratic elections.
British Ambassador Bristow said that London has been building its
relationships with Baku within the framework of its foreign policy
priorities. The priorities include prevention of international
terrorism, strengthening of democratic norms and implementation of
energy projects. Azerbaijan’s geostrategical importance for UK is in
these matters, said diplomat. He added that long-term development of
Azerbaijan and its partnership with UK is impossible without supremacy
of law, observation of human rights and democratic norms.
Deputy Asim Mollazade said that Azerbaijan’s geostrategic role grows
considering strategic partnership between Baku and Tbilisi. The
partnership allows resolving some global problems, including regional
security, global energy projects and integration into European
institutions. Settlement of these and other questions is possible
through active support of the West. But Armenia’s policy is based on
opposition to all these factors and Armenia is opposed to global
changes on the South Caucasus.
Georgii Gelashvili, representative of Georgian Public Sciences Centre,
said that Georgia and Azerbaijan are the countries implementing
regional projects and moving together towards Europe. The countries
need stability to carry into life their projects and weaken Russian
influence. As transportation of Caspian energy resources to the West
will grow, Russian influence will strengthen, he added. Alliance of
Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan is very important from this viewpoint
and Kazakhstan’s joining the alliance will be of great importance.
Gelashvili said Russia plays a destructive role on the South Caucasus
freezing the conflicts settlement, while Georgia and Azerbaijan are
opposed to Moscow’s efforts through support of the West.
Vladimir Kazimirov, former Russian co-chairman of OSCE Minsk Group,
has devoted his speech to the Karabakh conflict settlement. He
stressed that both Armenians and Azerbaijanis are wrong, because they
are doing nothing, but deceiving themselves. Kazimirov said the
parties should observe cease-fire regime and make peace. The statement
has caused protest of the participants, who accused Kazimirov of
pro-Armenian position and unwillingness to recognize the evident facts
of Azerbaijan’s occupation by Armenian troops. Kazimirov was so much
carried away by his reasoning that he did not take a risk to answer
the question if Chechnya belongs to Russia or not?
The seminar is organized by NGO Links and Civilization. British
Ambassador Laurie Bristow, Novruz Mamedov, head of presidential
administration’s international relations department, Ali Hasanov,
chief of presidential administration’s public-political department,
parliament Deputies, political scientists and experts from Russia,
Iran and Georgia take part at the seminar.
The following topics will be discussed at the seminar: Azerbaijan In
The Context of South Caucasus, Azerbaijan in the Context of Changes in
Europe and Near East and Advantage of Azerbaijan’s Geopolitical
Location.

Armenia’s Shikahogh Nature Reserve and Mtnadzor Forest at Great Risk

Armenia’s Shikahogh Nature Reserve and Mtnadzor Forest at Great Risk
YEREVAN, Armenia, June 8 /PRNewswire/ — Armenia, a country in the
South Caucasus which historically had forest cover of 40-45 percent,
is today at perilous risk of becoming completely deforested. Current
estimates place forest cover at around eight percent, and at current
rates of cutting, the last of the forests could be gone in as little
as 20 years.
Despite this, the Armenian government recently announced plans to
build a highway in the southern part of the country right through the
middle of the old growth Mtnadzor (Dark Canyon) forest, which occupies
about half of the Shikahogh nature reserve, one of only three pristine
reserves in the country.
According to reports, the plans call for cutting at least 14,000 old
growth trees and 90,000 younger ones. The Shikahogh reserve,
established in 1958, is home to innumerable rare and endangered plant
and animal species, including up to 12 leopards, whose habitats would
be gravely threatened by the road’s construction.
A coalition including Armenia Tree Project (ATP), Armenian Forests
NGO, World Wildlife Fund, and Armenian Assembly of America have been
working together to identify viable alternatives to the proposed route
and put a stop to the plan to begin immediate construction until
public hearings are held.
ATP founder Carolyn Mugar has sent a letter about the issue to the
President of Armenia, Minister of Nature Protection, Minister of
Transportation, and other high-ranking officials. “The Shikahogh
forest reserve provides unique habitats for many rare and endangered
plants and animals whose survival depends upon the government’s
responsible stewardship. We call on you to protect this reserve for
the sake of future generations of Armenians and the world’s
ecosystem,” wrote Ms. Mugar.
The Armenian government has cited “strategic” reasons for choosing the
route through the reserve, but hasn’t provided adequate justification
for the plan, which would violate numerous national laws and
internationally signed treatises to protect such nature preserves.
To date, the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Defense
have stated their intention to move forward with construction
plans. In response, the Minister of Nature Protection announced his
intention to resign if the road is constructed through the
reserve. This stated determination to ignore alternative routes has
led many to question the true motivation for the government’s plan,
given the monetary value of the oak trees from the old growth forest
that will be destroyed.
“The construction of the proposed road through the preserve will
introduce pollution from passing vehicles into this almost pristine
forest, destroy the habitat for rare wildlife and migratory paths, and
attract illegal logging, depriving future generations of Armenians of
an irreplaceable resource. The encroachment by illegal loggers has
already destroyed much of Armenia’s forests during the past decade,”
added the ATP founder in her letter.
“[If Armenia’s government] does not demonstrate responsible management
of its natural and historical heritage, it weakens its ability to
protect Armenia from the impact of destructive policies in neighboring
countries. Any gains that may be realized by building this road
through the preserve will be far outweighed by the long-term
environmental and political damage that Armenia will suffer. We most
urgently ask you to consider an alternative route,” concluded
Ms. Mugar in her appeal.

Soccer: Romania 3 Armenia 0

Sportinglife.com, UK
June 8 2005
Romania 3 Armenia 0
A new era of Romanian football got off to a somewhat luke-warm start
on Wednesday as Victor Piturca’s much-changed side limped to a 3-0
win against Armenia.
Romania’s 2-0 defeat to Group One leaders Holland at the weekend all
but ended their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup in 2006,
leaving them six points behind their opponents and five adrift of
second-placed Czech Republic.
Piturca admitted after the game that his side seem destined to miss
out and called instead for a new era to begin against Armenia with
qualification to the 2008 European Championships as the ultimate
goal.
Accordingly, only five of the side that lined up against the Dutch
were included in the starting eleven at the Gheorghe Hagi Stadium,
but fans looking for a revitalised performance were to leave
frustrated.
Ovidiu Petre opened the scoring midway through the first half before
goals either side of the interval from Gheorghe Bucur ultimately
sealed things.
But the hosts were far from compelling in their performance, never
looking to be in complete control.
Armenia meanwhile, despite their defeat, can take satisfaction in
providing a distinctly more encouraging performance than the dire
display they offered in losing 2-1 to FYR Macedonia at the weekend.
The visitors’ defensive game-plan was clear from the outset, with
Edgar Manchurian providing their only real presence up front.
Unsurprisingly therefore, Romania were soon dominating possession and
went ahead after 29 minutes.
Gigel Coman was the architect, creating space down the left flank
before delivering a superb cross that Petre headed home from six
yards.
Eleven minutes later and the game was effectively over.
Mihaita Plesan lofted a long ball to Dorinel Munteanu who in turn
nodded into the path of Bucur.
And the striker, in the team in place of Adrian Mutu, made no
mistake, firing home past Roman Berezovsky.
Bucur grabbed his second late on in a poor second period to add a
touch of gloss to the scoreline but Piturca can take heart – it was
the first time in 18 months that Romania have kept a clean sheet.
