ARMENIA FUND USA AND MEDICAL MISSIONS FOR CHILDREN EXPAND HEALTHCARE
OPTIONS FOR ARMENIAN CHILDREN
Partnership Will Bring Medical Education and Specialized Health Services
to Nagorno-Karabakh
Paterson, New Jersey, May 31, 2005 – Medical Missions for Children, a
non-profit organization dedicated to elevating the quality of care for
seriously ill children in underserved communities around the world,
today announced that it is partnering with Armenia Fund USA to address
the medical needs of Armenia’s sickest children and adults. With the
additional participation of the Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh Ministries
of Health, the Armenia Society of Pediatrics and the Armenia Institute
of Pediatric and Adolescent Health, Medical Missions for Children is
laying the groundwork for the expansion of its Global Telemedicine &
Teaching NetworkT into this region of the Newly Independent States
(NIS).
In conjunction with Armenia Fund USA’s newly-developed Armine Pagoumian
Polyclinic in Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh, Medical Missions for
Children will implement a medical education program focused around the
topics of pediatric cardiology, otolaryngology (ENT), oncology and
orthopedics. Additionally, Medical Missions for Children will introduce
remote diagnostics capabilities that will allow physicians in the U.S.
to participate in the examination and diagnosis of pediatric illnesses
related to the upper and lower respiratory system, ear, nose, throat and
eye infections.
“Our expectation is that through Medical Missions for Children’s
telemedicine and satellite technologies, we will create a gateway from
Armenia to the 30 medical institutions that make up the mentoring
component of our Global Telemedicine & Teaching Network,” said John
Riehl, executive vice president, Medical Missions for Children. “It is
this same strategy that proved to be very successful for Medical
Missions for Children five years ago when it first established itself as
a vital medical resource to physicians and children living in Latin
America.”
Armenia Fund USA is spearheading the development of a new healthcare
clinic, the Stepanakert Polyclinic and Diagnostic Center, located in the
region’s capital. The existing healthcare facility in Stepanakert was
partially destroyed in the war. The new polyclinic will be the first
and only full care medical center in the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The facility is expected to be operational before the end of summer
2005. Besides fully equipping the clinic, Armenia Fund USA, under the
direction of Dr. Alina Dorian, has been implementing an extensive
training program for the past 18 months. This training includes all of
the clinic’s staff, utilizing specialized training materials and staff
from both the John Hopkins and UCLA facilities in the United States.
“The Global Telemedicine & Teaching Network facility, introduced by
Medical Missions for Children to the Armine Pagoumian Polyclinic in
Stepanakert, will greatly enhance the levels of service and
technological sophistication the polyclinic will be able to provide to
residents of Karabakh,” said Kevork Toroyan, chairman of Armenia Fund
USA.
“We are excited to enhance and expand the medical services Armenia Fund
USA is able to provide critically ill children in Armenia,” said Frank
Brady, founder and chairman of the board, Medical Missions for Children.
“Our relationship will help children who might not otherwise receive the
treatment they desperately need. At the same time, we will provide
access to additional medical education programming that is designed to
enhance learning. This is a unique opportunity to partner with Armenia
Fund USA and we are grateful for the support the group is providing.”
Medical Missions for Children and its Global Telemedicine & Teaching
NetworkT helps critically ill children in underserved communities around
the world. Through an extensive videoconferencing network, Medical
Missions for Children supports the real-time treatment of remote,
critically ill children. In addition utilizing its fully FCC licensed
broadcast station, WMMC, and expansive digital video library, transmits
worldwide an on-going program of continuing medical education to
physicians, nurses, medical students and hospital administrators.
The organization’s global network encompasses pediatric healthcare
facilities in 36 medically underserved countries and the volunteer
services of 26 tier-one U.S.-based and four international medical
institutions. Since the organization was founded, more than 23,500
children have been helped. Medical Missions for Children continues to
work toward its goal of touching the lives of over one million children
each year.

Gruelling win puts Anderson on course for title eliminator
Gruelling win puts Anderson on course for title eliminator
The Scotsman – United Kingdom; Jun 13, 2005
Stephen Halliday
IF KEVIN Anderson goes on to fulfil the rich potential many believe
he has, then the 22-year-old welterweight prospect may one day look
back on Saturday night in Kirkcaldy as a pivotal moment in his career.
Anderson’s gruelling but convincing ten-round points victory over
Vladimir Borovski at the Fife Ice Arena is likely to prove more
valuable than any of the early stoppage wins the exciting Buckhaven
boxer had previously recorded since turning professional two years ago.
The young Scot was forced to dig deep and extend himself for
almost every minute of every round against his experienced and
resilient Ukrainian opponent. If referee Al Hutcheon’s 99-92 verdict
in Anderson’s favour was merited, it nonetheless failed to tell the
whole story of just how exacting a night’s work it was for the local
hero in front of a partisan 1,500 crowd.
“It was a good learning fight for me,” said Anderson. “I will take
a lot more from going ten rounds for the first time with a guy
like Borovski than I would have done from an early knockout. I’m
looking to step up to championship class now, so that was the perfect
preparation.”
Anderson has been nominated to face Welsh champion Bradley Pryce in
a final eliminator for the British welterweight title, a contest his
manager and promoter Tommy Gilmour hopes to stage in Kirkcaldy later
this year after the unqualified success of the first professional
show staged in Fife since 1952.
An audience which included 82-year-old Jim Gallacher, the former
middleweight who boxed on the last bill staged at the Ice Arena, were
enthralled by the main event in which the frantic pace set from the
first bell by Anderson barely dropped as he sought relentlessly for
a way through Borovski’s unflinching defence. “It was always going to
be a tough fight, but I thought I had him hurt in the opening rounds
and really went for it,” said Anderson. “I thought I would stop him
in the first five rounds, but he was really tough. When I went back
to the corner after the fifth round, my corner told me to stay on
the jab and just keep winning the rounds.
“His defence was excellent. I was trying the get him to drop his hands
by working him to the body, but he kept his guard really tight all
the way through. I’ve got a few things I’ll need to work on when I
go back to the gym, but overall I’m happy with my performance. The
atmosphere in the arena was brilliant and it really gave me a lift
boxing at home for the first time. Hopefully we can come back here
with the title fights.”
Gilmour was delighted with Anderson’s 14th consecutive win since
turning professional two years ago and believes he is now ready to
step into championship class.
“Considering Kevin had not boxed since January, I was really pleased
with him,” said Gilmour. “What would a two-round blowout have given
him in terms of preparation for the British title eliminator with
Bradley Pryce? This was the kind of really hard fight he needed at
this stage of his career.
“He tried a lot of different things in there and his level of fitness
was superb. It has given him an indication of what is required to step
up to the next level. No-one can say we have fed the boy a diet of
easy opponents, he is learning his trade properly and I’m delighted
with the pace of his progress.”
On a superbly matched undercard, Glenrothes light-heavyweight Stevie
McGuire racked up a fourth straight success with a 59-56 points
win over Varuzhan Davtyan of Armenia and crowd-pleasing Aberdeen
light-welterweight Mike Reid maintained his unbeaten record with a
60-54 shut-out against Birmingham’s Lance Veralo.
Stuart Green, the Glenrothes lightweight, was equally impressive in
beating Dave Hinds of Birmingham 60-54 but there was disappointment
for Edinburgh light-welter Keith Ellwood who lost 59-55 to Sunderland’s
Martin Marshall.
“The way the crowd reacted, not just to Kevin but to the whole show,
was fabulous,” said Gilmour. “I’m going to bid for the eliminator
with Pryce and try to bring it back to the Ice Arena later this year.
Kevin deserves it and so do the fans who turned out on Saturday night.”
U.S Congress to discuss Armenian Genocide Resolution
US CONGRESS TO DISCUSS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESOLUTION
Pan Armenian News
13.06.2005 03:12
/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The US Congress will discuss the Armenian Genocide
Resolution introduced by Congressmen George Radanovich and Adam Schiff.
Within the next several weeks the House Committee on International
Relations will submit the new resolution on the Armenian Genocide”,
Mr. Schiff said. To note, last time the Committee voted on the
issue five years ago. Earlier member of the Congressional Caucus
on Armenian Issues Adam Schiff submitted two draft resolutions. One
of them confirmed the Armenian Genocide, the other condemned Turkey
for imposing blockade upon Armenia. However the Congress refrained
from discussing the projects. Mr. Schiff agreed to recall them on
the condition that the House Committee on International Relations
will consider his resolution. According to the Congressmen, this
agreement does not guarantee the support of the committee chairman
or its members. However during the recent 5 years the opportunity
did not occur. “The resolution records of the Armenian Genocide and
1.5 million people killed at the beginning of the 20-th century. It
also says that the US Congress acknowledges the Armenian Genocide”,
the Congressmen added, RFE/RL reports.

RA FM called U.S to urge Turkey to open border
RA FM CALLED US TO URGE TURKEY TO OPEN BORDER
Pan Armenian News
13.06.2005 04:32
/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian called the
United States to more active engagement in the process of establishing
normal relations between Armenia and Turkey and to urge Ankara to
lift Armenia’s blockade. The US is active and we would like to see
Washington engaged in the issue as well”, Vartan Oskanian said after
the meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In his words,
the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide is still on
the agenda of the Armenian foreign policy. “Argentina, France, Poland
and Russia are among the countries to have recognized the Armenian
Genocide, however the US Administration still hesitates. Turkey in
its turn should not avoid the issue before establishing relations
with Armenia”, he added. According to the RA FM, the US should call
upon Ankara to become a bridge not only between the East and West
but also between various parts of Europe. “Armenia and Turkey are
not at war. We have no problems with the country but for historical
discrepancies. Germany and France also disagree on some historical
facts but they do not close borders”, Vartan Oskanian stressed,
RFE/RL reports.
John Evans: Allegations about U.S embarkation on revolutions….
JOHN EVANS: ALLEGATIONS ABOUT US EMBARKATION ON REVOLUTIONS IN POST-SOVIET STATES GROUNDLESS
Pan Armenian News
13.06.2005 03:47
/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The allegations about the embarkation of the United
States Government on a campaign to destabilize the newly independent
states of the former Soviet Union the entirely unfounded, US Ambassador
to Armenia John Evans stated when addressing the American University
of Armenia. “One hears and reads that US embassies have been turned
into headquarters for fomenting such revolutions, that millions of
dollars have been channeled to groups plotting to seize power. I have
not yet heard it alleged that the United States has sent anyone into
this part of the world in a sealed train, but it would not surprise me
to hear such a thing”, he added. When touching upon the formation of
democratic institutes in Armenia Mr. Evans said, “The job of building
democracy in the Republic of Armenia has been well started. The main
principles of freedom and democracy have found their expression in
the Constitution and major legislation that is now on the books. But
what still needs work is the job of building and strengthening the
institutions that make a democracy function as it should. The United
States remains committed to helping Armenia — its government, courts,
parliament, political parties and citizens — build, strengthen and
refine the free institutions of which President Bush has spoken. Over
the next few years, and in particular in the time remaining before
the elections of 2007 and 2008, the United States will work actively
with our Armenian partners to help make those institutions as good
as they can be, for the good of the people of Armenia, and for the
advancement of freedom in the world.”
