AKP DEPUTY VISITS ARMENIA
Turhan Comez, Balikesir deputy from the ruling Justice and Development
Party (AKP), who is carrying out contacts in neighboring Armenia,
yesterday met with French Ambassador Henry Cuny in Yerevan. During
their talks, Cuny said that some 20-25 Turkish students who can speak
French might study at the French University in Yerevan and Armenian
students studying at the French University could go to a Turkish
University as part of a student exchange program. Comez the first
Turkish parliamentarian to visit Armenia also met with Ghiro Manoyan of
the nationalist Dashnaksutiun Party. He said the meeting was unofficial
and pointed to the importance of exchanging views. Manoyan said it
was the first time he had met with a Turkish politician, adding that
he was hopeful that two nations could live in peace. /Turkiye/

ARIS ATAMIAN ELECTED MEMBER OF AGBU CENTRAL BOARD
New York, NY – Mr. Aris Atamian of Paris, France, was elected a member
of the Central Board of the Armenian General Benevolent Union at its
meeting of May 14, 2005. A prominent business leader with lifelong
service to his community, Mr. Atamian will be of great assistance
to the AGBU Central Board as it moves forward with programs and
activities to meet the needs of Armenians worldwide. AGBU President
Berge Setrakian noted that Mr. Atamian’s credentials will be valued in
the development of future plans of the organization throughout Europe.
Mr. Atamian is a renowned architect based in Paris, France, and
since 1986, has been a partner of Fernier & Associates. Mr. Atamian
has many achievements to his credit, including the restoration of
Palais Ducal, and the design of the Museum of Zervos Foundation,
the Financial Justice headquarters, and the Cultural Center of the
Popular Republic of China, all in France. He is also the architect
of several projects housing various ministry offices in France.
Mr. Atamian has been a member of AGBU for several decades and has
served as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the AGBU Youth Committee in
Paris. He was instrumental in the realization of the building project
of the AGBU Alex Manoogian Cultural Center in Paris, serving as a
volunteer architect. Mr. Atamian also contributed his expertise and
advice on the AGBU France District project to rebuild the Norashen
village in Karabakh.

Chinese, Armenian foreign ministers discuss ties

Yerevan, 13 June: Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan met
Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing
in Beijing today.
The two foreign ministers expressed satisfaction with a growth in trade
between Armenia and China by 73 per cent during the first quarter of
this year, the Foreign Ministry’s press office told Mediamax today. The
sides stressed the importance of cooperation in the spheres of science,
technology and education.
Oskanyan and Zhaoxing discussed cooperation in international
organizations, particularly in the UN. They also exchanged ideas on
the problems of Nagornyy Karabakh and Taiwan.

L’ouverture des négociations est prévue en octobre
Le ministre de l’Intérieur revient à la charge sur la Turquie
Nicolas Sarkozy s’est interrogé samedi sur l’opportunité d’ouvrir en
octobre des négociations d’adhésion de la Turquie à l’Union
européenne, se demandant s’il n’y a «pas d’autre urgence». Après
avoir appelé à «repenser notre stratégie européenne», le nouveau
ministre de l’Intérieur a estimé que la «première priorité» était de
«fixer des frontières géographiques à l’Europe».
«L’élargissement à l’Est que j’ai soutenu, mais qui a été
insuffisamment préparé et pas du tout expliqué, a pesé lourd dans la
victoire du non» au référendum du 29 mai sur la Constitution
européenne, a-t-il estimé.
«Est-il raisonnable d’ouvrir des négociations avec la Turquie
puisqu’il s’agit d’une grande nation d’Asie mineure, pas d’Europe ?»,
a-t-il ajouté. «Il y aurait moins d’aigreur à proposer tout de suite
un statut de partenaire privilégié plutôt que de poursuivre des
discussions commencées il y a 40 ans et, pour cause, jamais
terminées.»
Patrick Devedjian, conseiller politique du président de l’UMP et
ancien ministre, s’est montré encore plus virulent sur cette
question. «Nous devons demander que l’ouverture des négociations soit
reportée. Surtout quand les élections allemandes de septembre
laissent présager un nouveau gouvernement allemand, avec un
changement radical de politique : il serait décent d’attendre»,
a-t-il affirmé, après avoir rappelé que «le chancelier (Gerhard)
Schröder a été le militant le plus acharné à cette cause.» M.
Devedjian a également affirmé que, «malgré les discours, la Turquie
n’a fait aucun progrès réel sur le chemin des valeurs qui fondent
l’Union européenne», en insistant sur «la situation des femmes» dans
ce pays, la non-reconnaissance par Ankara du génocide des Arméniens
et «la situation faite aux minorités, kurdes et chrétiennes».

gegen ein ~DArmeniermärchen~S berichten
Am kommenden Sonntag soll der Kurfürstendamm in ein Meer aus
Halbmond-Fahnen getaucht werden, kündigten am Sonnabend alle
türkischen Zeitungen an. Zumindest die Türkische Gemeinde zu Berlin
(TGB) wünscht sich dies Bild bei einer Demonstration, die sich gegen
~Ddie Entwicklungen in Berlin und Deutschland~S (Hürriyet) beim Thema
~DArmeniermärchen~S (Türkiye) richtet. Der Protestzug soll sich um 12
Uhr am Adenauerplatz in Bewegung setzen und an der Gedächtniskirche
enden.
Genauer erklärte die Hürriyet in den Unterzeilen: ~DAm 19. Juni wird
aufgrund der Entwicklungen im Deutschen Parlament, den so genannten
Armeniergenozid anzuerkennen, und aufgrund des gerade erschienenen
Buches der Integrations- und Migrationsbehörde in Berlin, in dem über
den so genannten Armeniergenozid berichtet wird, eine Demonstration
stattfinden.~S Und tatsächlich will der Migrationsbeauftragte des
Senats, Günter Piening, demnächst das 49. Heft aus der Schriftenreihe
seiner Behörde über das Leben und die Geschichte der in Berlin
vertretenen Ethnien vorstellen. Der Titel: ~DArmenier in Berlin ~V
Berlin und Armenien~S. Was die Türken aufregt, sind die Seiten des
Heftes, die sich dem Völkermord an den Armeniern 1915 durch die
osmanische Armee widmen. Die Türkei bewertet die damaligen
Ereignisse, bei denen nach armenischen Angaben 1,5 Millionen Menschen
umkamen, bis heute nicht als Völkermord.
Doch ob die ursprünglich für den gestrigen Sonntag angekündigte
Demonstration wegen der Publikation des Ausländerbeauftragten
verschoben wurde, ging aus den türkischen Zeitungen nicht hervor.
Noch bevor das Werk der Armenienkennerin Tessa Hofmann der
Öffentlichkeit gezeigt werden konnte, zeigte die Hürriyet am
Donnerstag die Titelseite des Heftes mit der Überschrift: ~DDie große
Schande von Berlin~S. Daraufhin bat die Türkische Botschaft die
Migrationsbehörde um ein Exemplar. Am Sonnabend zeigten die Zeitungen
Vertreter der Türkischen Gemeinde mit Plakaten: ~DJetzt reicht es!
Nimm Deine Fahne in die Hand und komm! 19. Juni 2005. Die Türken ~V
eine Stimme und Herz!~S, war darauf zu lesen. Nach einem Bericht der
Türkiye wollen sich an dem Protestmarsch mindestens acht türkische

13. Juni 2005 Hatte Justizminister Cemil Cicek “Mein Kampf” gelesen?
Zumindest kreischte er am Rednerpult des Parlaments über einen neuen
Dolchstoß. Ins Visier nahm er die Organisatoren einer Konferenz
türkischer Historiker, die über den Genozid an den Armeniern
debattieren wollten. Sie klagte er an, der großen türkischen Nation
den Dolch in den Rücken stoßen zu wollen.
Als die inneren Feinde der Türken identifizierte er diese
unabhängigen türkischen Historiker, die sich nicht der offiziellen
Lesart der Geschichte beugen. Cicek hätte jedenfalls einige Auswahl
gehabt. In den Ausgaben dreizehn türkischer Verlage hätte er sich von
Hitlers “Mein Kampf” über dessen Version der Dolchstoßlegende
inspirieren lassen können – wie also die Juden und Marxisten den
Helden Deutschlands im Ersten Weltkrieg den Sieg geraubt haben
sollen.
Seit Februar sehr gefragt
Zusammen mit anderen üblen national-rassistischen Machwerken, etwa
dem Roman “Metallfeuer” über einen türkisch-amerikanischen Atomkrieg,
zieren sie seit Monaten die Bestsellerlisten der Türkei. Dabei ist
“Mein Kampf” erstmals 1939 als “Kavgam” ins Türkische übersetzt
worden. Erst seit Februar aber kommen die Verleger mit neuen Auflagen
nicht nach, breit ist der Kreis der Leser.
Unverdächtige sind darunter und solche, die sich von einem neuen
Anti-Globalisierungs-Nationalismus mitreißen lassen. Zum einen lesen
Intellektuelle und an der Zeitgeschichte interessierte Akademiker
“Kavgam”. Denn auch in der Türkei ist das Interesse an den beiden
Weltkriegen des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts erwacht. Zudem haben viele
eben Eichingers Film “Der Untergang” gesehen und wollen nun dazu eine
authentische Quelle heranziehen, nicht einfach nur ein trockenes
Historikerbuch. Zum anderen baue sich in der Türkei eine Welle jener
auf, die in jedem Nächsten einen Feind witterten und die sich vor der
Außenwelt einigeln wollten, beschreibt der Soziologe Ahmet Insel den
zweiten, bedenklicheren Leserkreis.
Nicht der Islam, sondern rüder Nationalismus
Anhänger der nationalistischen Parteien MHP und Genc Parti
verschlingen “Kavgam”, auch Schüler der Polizeiakademien. Ein
ehemaliger MHP-Abgeordneter freut sich, daß die Türkei endlich wieder
mit einem “nationalen Verhalten” auf den “imperialistischen Druck”
von außen reagiere. Die Lektüre von “Mein Kampf” bezeichnet er
offenherzig als “eine Chance”. Sein Genosse Parteivize schränkt aber
ein: Nie könne ein Deutscher für einen Türken Vorbild sein – weder
Marx noch Hitler.
Wilde Komplotttheorien machen die Runde. Juden sollen heiligen
türkischen Boden im oberen Mesopotamien aufkaufen, um ihren Traum von
einem Groß-Israel zu verwirklichen; Amerika stecke hinter den
Erdbeben in der Türkei, um die große Nation zu schwächen; alles, was
der Westen tue, ziele ohnehin nur darauf, die Türkei zu teilen – wie
im Friedensdiktat von Sevres 1920. Wieder einmal zeigt sich, daß
nicht der Islam die türkische Nation zusammenhält, sondern ein rüder
Nationalismus. Mit ihm nimmt der Antiamerikanismus zu, auch der
Antisemitismus.
Bücher, die Hitlers Genozid an den Juden leugnen, sind auf dem Markt,
auch Neuauflagen des “Protokolls der Weisen von Zion”. Verleger Sami
Celik bleibt aber gelassen. “Kavgam” sei mit umgerechnet 3,50 Euro
eben preiswert, und zudem entscheide ja die Stimmung in der
Gesellschaft über den Verkaufserfolg eines Buchs, exkulpiert er seine
verlegerische Entscheidung. Und er selbst stehe in völligem Gegensatz
zu dem, was “Mein Kampf” verkünde.

Iran, Armenia to expand educational, scientific cooperation

Moscow, June 13, IRNA — Visiting Iranian Minister of Education
Morteza Haji conferred with his Armenian Counterpart Sergo Yeritsian
in Yerevan on Monday.
In the meeting, the Armenian side described the Iranian delegation
visit to Armenia important in expanding ties in the field of education
and science.
Haji, for his part, expressed satisfaction over the two countries
cooperation in different fields.
Both sides stressed on forming work group, exchanging experiences,
cooperation in the field of educational aids and text books.
Iranian delegation arrived at Yerevan airport on Monday for a three-day
official visit.
The delegation also visited Yerevan State University today and
discussed mutual academic affairs with the university chancellor.

ANC Applauds Election Monitors to Observe Nagorno-Karabagh Elections

The Armenian National Committee applauds Global Exchange, a San
Francisco based human rights organization, for sending a delegation
of independent human rights observers to Nagorno-Karabagh this
month for its parliamentary elections. Tom Miller, Human Rights
Attorney and General Counsel of Global Exchange, and Chris Michael,
Coordinator of the Global Exchange Democracy Program, will lead the
delegation. They will be joined by Dan Shartin and Leontina Hormel,
both of Worcester State College, and its Center for the Study of Human
Rights. The delegation will arrive in Karabagh the week prior to the
June 19th elections.
“This delegation led by Global Exchange and the Center for the
Study of Human Rights marks an important step in building a highly
functioning civil society in Karabagh,” stated Dikran Kaligian,
Chairman of the Armenian National Committee for the Eastern United
States. “Global Exchange comes to Karabagh with broad experience
in election monitoring, while Worcester State College’s Center has
extensive contacts in the human rights community. The Karabagh
conflict has raised controversial issues regarding democracy in
the region. All parties will be well served by allowing impartial
observers to be present during elections in Karabagh, as well as in
Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
With Azerbaijan under scrutiny for rigged elections and corruption,
fledgling Karabagh feels it can hardly afford to hold unfair
elections, especially when its de jure status still hangs in the
balance internationally. However, sources in the region report
pre-election hirings and firings, bribes and pork-barrel spending,
and various forms of intimidation in the run up to the elections.
Global Exchange (GX) is an international human rights organization
with an established track record of promoting political, social and
environmental justice on a global scale. Since its founding in 1988,
it has worked to increase global awareness among the U.S. public while
building partnerships around much of the world. Its Political and Civil
Rights Campaigns include the monitoring and reporting on human rights
and elections in areas of the world often beleaguered with protracted
conflict. It has supported pro-democracy movements in South Africa,
Cuba, Mexico, Indonesia, the United States and other countries.
Ted Smith is GX’s Democracy International Program Director. “We are
excited about this visit to explore the possibility of expanding our
activities in the Caucuses. We look forward to meeting with the NKR
Central Electoral Commission as well as official and ordinary members
of Karabagh’s civil society. Through informally observing these
elections, we can see if comprehensive monitoring can be arranged in
the future,” said Lewis. The delegation will serve as observers on
June 19 and will remain in Karabagh until the vote tally concludes
the following day.
Based in Massachusetts, the Center for the Study of Human Rights
at Worcester State College examines and explores issues of human
rights and presents these primarily through speaker series, which
have included Noam Chomsky, U.S. Representative James P. McGovern,
Archbishop of South Africa Ndungane, poet activist Dennis Brutus
and many others. The Center received an official citation from the
Massachusetts State Senate for contributing to the advancements of
human rights through community and academic education. The Center’s
director, Dr. Henry Theriault, said, “In receiving Professors Shartin
and Hormel, the people of Nagorno-Karabagh will empower their future
by hosting deeply conscientious and highly trained witnesses of
their elections.”
