Armenian prime minister highlights transport links, regional connectivity as key next steps after Yerevan EU summit

YEREVAN, Armenia (MNTV) — Armenia’s prime minister Nikol Pashinyan said efforts to normalize relations with Azerbaijan will continue beyond any future peace treaty, stressing the need for additional agreements on sectoral cooperation.

Speaking alongside António Costa, president of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, following an Armenia–EU summit in Yerevan, Pashinyan said a peace agreement would mark the beginning rather than the end of the process.

“Signing and ratifying a peace agreement does not mean the work is finished,” he said. “The text itself makes it clear that additional arrangements will be required afterward, including on sectoral cooperation.”

He pointed to transport as a key area, noting that some cooperation is already taking place informally. Pashinyan emphasized the importance of reopening regional routes, including borders with Türkiye, to facilitate trade and movement.

“It is extremely important that we fully open roads for each other,” he said, adding that improved connectivity would support economic development and regional integration.

The prime minister said the principle guiding cooperation should be unhindered transport links while respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty.

He also referenced prior trilateral understandings between Armenia, Azerbaijan and international partners, including a summit held in Washington in August 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize relations.

Pashinyan said there is “enormous potential” in expanding cooperation and expressed cautious optimism about progress.

“For the first time in our shared history, Armenia and Azerbaijan are using the same or very similar rhetoric,” he said. “We are learning to live in conditions of peace.”

Despite the progress, he acknowledged that defining and implementing lasting peace remains an evolving process for both countries.

President Donald Trump said the U.S. is pausing its operation to guide stranded vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the pause to “Project Freedom,” which began two days ago, came because of “great progress” toward a deal with Iran.

Under “Project Freedom,” the U.S. said it would guide ships through the Strait of Hormuz and help restore the flow of oil from the region.

“Based on the request of Pakistan and other Countries, the tremendous Military Success that we have had during the Campaign against the Country of Iran and, additionally, the fact that Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement with Representatives of Iran, we have mutually agreed that, while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom (The Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed,” the U.S. President said on Truth Social.

Iranian state media claimed Trump has “retreated” after “continued failures” to reopen the vital waterway.

To mark the contributions of Armenians across various sectors in the United States and in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, a special reception titled “Armenians in America 250” was held at the headquarters of the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C.

The event was organized by the Embassy of Armenia in the United States in cooperation with the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU).

The reception was attended by high-level officials from the White House, the National Security Council, and the Departments of State, Commerce, Energy, and War, as well as members of the Armenian-American community from various states, the Armenian Embassy said in a press release.

The event is part of a series of initiatives carried out by Armenia’s US representation within the framework of the USA250 celebrations, with the encouragement and support of the White House Office of Public Liaison.

Speeches were delivered by Narek Mkrtchyan, Armenia’s Ambassador to the United States; Jeffrey Kessler, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security; Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom250, the organization responsible for the official events celebrating the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence; and Sam Simonian, President of AGBU.

The event opened with the national anthems of the United States and Armenia, performed by students of the Shnorhali School of St. Mary Armenian Apostolic Church in Washington, D.C. Opening prayers were offered by Rev. Fr. Untzag Nalbandian, who then presented welcoming remarks on behalf of Abp. Hovnan Derderian and Bp. Mesrop Parsamyan, Primates of the Western and Eastern Dioceses of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America, respectively. AGBU Central Board member Haig Ariyan served as master of ceremonies.

As part of the program, a reissued edition of the commemorative book “Our Boys,” dedicated to Armenian World War II veterans, was presented by AGBU Vice President Arda Haratunian. Originally published in 1951, the book documents the service and contributions of Armenian-Americans during the war.

Copies of the reissued edition were gifted to Jaxon Croy, Deputy Director for Strategic Initiatives at the White House, and Sonata Coulter, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State overseeing Russia, the Caucasus, and European Security and Political Affairs.

Stories highlighting Armenian contributions across various sectors in the United States were also presented by Robin the Robot, an Armenian-developed robot that currently provides services in more than 40 hospitals and care facilities across the United States.

The evening concluded with performances of Armenian folk and traditional music by the “Marta and Folk Orchestra.”
