Turkey and Armenia Move Closer to Historic Normalization Deal

May 16 2026

  • Turkey approved new rules allowing goods traded with Armenia to move under streamlined customs procedures, including via third countries.
  • Armenia welcomed the decision as a step toward expanded trade, regional connectivity, and eventual diplomatic relations.
  • The shared border has been closed since 1993, but normalization talks have gained momentum since 2022.

Turkey and Armenia have taken a major stride in settling their historical differences, agreeing on a bureaucratic framework to promote direct trade between the two states.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry announced on May 13 that Ankara had approved streamlined regulations for goods moving to/from Turkey and Armenia via third countries. A ministry statement added that the two states are now working towards reopening their shared border.

“The necessary technical and bureaucratic studies for the opening of the common border between the two countries are still ongoing,” it stated.

Due to historical grievances, Armenia and Turkey have never had diplomatic relations. Their shared border has remained closed since 1993, when Turkey sealed it in a show of solidarity with Azerbaijan during the First Karabakh War, which saw Armenian forces secure the disputed Nagorno Karabakh territory, along with broad swathes of Azerbaijan proper.

Turkish and Armenian officials have been engaged in a process aimed at normalizing relations since 2022. A previous joint initiative to establish diplomatic relations, launched in 2009, eventually stalled.

Officials in Yerevan applauded the Turkish decision to ease trade rules, describing it as “an important step” in efforts to establish diplomatic relations.

“This decision is essential from the perspective of expanding trade and business circles between the two countries, boosting economic connectivity in the region, and ensuring peace and prosperity,” read an Armenian Foreign Ministry statement.

U.S. President Donald Trump said in a pre-recorded Fox News interview after his visit to Beijing that China has agreed to buy American oil, as the two nations push for concrete trade and business wins at their bilateral summit.

“They’ve agreed they want to buy oil from the United States, they’re going to go to Texas, we’re going to start sending Chinese ships to Texas and to Louisiana and to Alaska,” Trump said in the interview that was conducted after his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday.

China also agreed to help with Iran negotiations and not to supply military equipment to Tehran, Trump said, adding that the Chinese leader would like to see the Strait of Hormuz open and free of tolls.

“They have an insatiable appetite for energy, and we have unlimited energy,” Trump said, saying that the U.S. produces more oil & gas than Saudi Arabia and Russia combined: “we’re doing twice as much oil and gas, as they are.”

Other details on the possible deal weren’t immediately available.

The U.S. produced 23.6 million barrels of oil and other liquid fuel per day in 2025, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, while Saudi Arabia produced 11.21 million bpd and Russia 10.53 million bpd.

China is by far the largest buyer of Iranian oil, purchasing around 90% of Iran’s crude exports, according to CNBC.

Trump says China agrees to buy 200 Boeing jets

Read the article in: Armenian Türkçe:

China has agreed to buy 200 Boeing jets, U.S. President Donald Trump told Fox News on Thursday.

According to Reuters, the number was far fewer than analysts had expected, and the planemaker’s shares fell.

Details of the deal were not immediately available, including when and which types of jets would be delivered, but the amount was much smaller than the roughly 500-plane package that sources told Reuters was under discussion ahead of a meeting on Thursday between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

“One thing he agreed to today, he’s going to order 200 jets … 200 big ones,” Trump said on Fox News’ Hannity, referring to Xi.

Boeing shares fell 4.1% during market trading afterward.

The talks had been for 500 Boeing 737 MAX jets, plus possibly dozens of more expensive widebody jets in follow-on orders after the summit, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the discussions. China has also been in talks for a similarly sized deal with European planemaker Airbus.

CIA chief visits Cuba

U. S.10:49, 15 May 2026
Read the article in: ArmenianRussian:

CIA director John Ratcliffe on ‌May 14 delivered a message from U.S. President Donald Trump to top Cuban officials in Havana that the U.S. would “seriously engage” with the island´s government on economic and security issues “only if it makes fundamental changes,” Reuters reported, citing a CIA official.

Ratcliffe’s trip appeared to be only the second visit by a CIA director to Cuba since former leader Fidel Castro´s 1959 revolution, according to Reuters.

The CIA official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, did not elaborate on the specific changes that Trump was demanding.

The U.S. has for decades demanded Cuba open its state-run economy, pay reparations for properties expropriated by the Castro government and hold “free and fair” elections.

Trump has increased pressure on Cuba, effectively imposing a fuel blockade on the island by threatening tariffs on countries supplying it with fuel, igniting seemingly endless power outages and delivering new blows to the island´s already ailing economy.

Cuba first disclosed Ratcliffe’s visit in a statement saying he held talks with his Cuban counterpart at the Interior Ministry in Havana.

“Both sides … underscored their interest in developing bilateral cooperation between law enforcement agencies in the interest of the security of both countries, as well as regional and international security,” the statement ‌said.

Cuba’s representatives said the island does not pose a threat to U.S. national security, the statement said.

The statement was issued after a U.S. government plane was seen departing Havana’s international airport on Thursday afternoon, according to a Reuters witness.

Ratcliffe delivered “Trump’s message that the United States is prepared to seriously engage on economic and security issues, but only if Cuba makes fundamental changes,” the CIA official told Reuters.

The sides also discussed “intelligence cooperation, economic stability, and security issues, all against the backdrop that Cuba can no longer be a safe haven for adversaries in the Western Hemisphere,” the official added.

Read the article in: ArmenianRussian:

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump had a private meeting on Friday in Beijing, the Chinese Xinhua news agency reported.

The meeting came a day after Xi held talks with Trump.

Xi lauded the “historic and landmark” visit of the American president.

Xi said the two sides had set the new vision of building a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability.

“We have reached important common understandings on maintaining stable economic and trade ties, expanding practical cooperation in various fields, and properly addressing each other’s concerns,” Xinhua quoted Xi as saying.

The two sides also agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues, according to Xi.

The visit is conducive to enhancing mutual understanding, deepening mutual trust and improving the well-being of the two peoples, Xi said.

This once again demonstrates that it is a shared aspiration of both peoples and the expectation of people across the world for China and the United States to find a right path to get along with each other and to achieve peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, Xi added.

“While President Trump hopes to make America great again, I am dedicated to leading the Chinese people toward national rejuvenation,” Xi said, stressing that the two countries can advance their respective development and revitalization by strengthening cooperation.

China and the United States should implement the important common understandings that have been reached, cherish the hard-won positive momentum, keep to the right direction, steer clear of disruptions, and promote the steady development of bilateral relations, Xi said.

Britain’s foreign minister plans to visit China in early June

Read the article in: ArmenianRussian:

British foreign minister Yvette Cooper is expected to visit China in early June, Reuters reported, citing three sources.

The June 2-3 trip will take Cooper to Beijing for talks with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and then to the southern tech hub of Shenzhen for meetings with businesses, according to the report.

Briefings are being prepared on the basis that even if there is a leadership contest to oust British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, that would take weeks or months and Cooper would likely still travel regardless, two British officials said.

British PM Keir Starmer and Chinese leader Xi Jinping announced a “reset” in ties during a January visit to China, following the British government’s approval of plans for Beijing to build its largest embassy in Europe in London, and paving the way for the lifting of Chinese sanctions on six serving lawmakers.

Trump raises possibility of U.S.-Russia-China nuclear deal

U. S.16:08, 15 May 2026
Read the article in: فارسی, Armenian, Russian:

U.S. President Donald Trump said he raised the possibility of a nuclear deal involving the United States, Russia, and China during talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Trump told reporters he wants the three countries to sign a pact that would cap the number of nuclear warheads in each nation’s arsenal, according to The Associated Press.

Beijing’s arsenal, according to Pentagon estimates, exceeds 600 operational nuclear warheads and remains far from parity with the United States and Russia, which are each estimated to possess more than 5,000 nuclear warheads.

But Trump suggested Xi was receptive to the idea when he raised it during their private talks.

“I got a very positive response,” Trump said. “This is the beginning.”

The last nuclear arms pact between Russia and the United States, known as New START, expired in February, removing caps on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals for the first time in more than half a century.
