Primary objective is for Armenia to be the principal beneficiary of its mining resources, says ICMA Executive Chairman

 19:00, 8 December 2023

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 8, ARMENPRESS. Executive Chairman of the International Chamber of Mines of Armenia (ICMA) Artyom Geghamyan believes that due to its geographical location and certain resources, Armenia  has the opportunity to become an important player in the field of mining and to give its share to the world, in exchange for welfare for the population, technologies and higher environmental standards for the country.

Within the framework of the conference organized by the newly created chamber, Geghamyan told Armenpress that taking into account the developments related to the extraction of critical metals in the field of metallurgy all over the world, as well as certain reserves and mining experience in Armenia, the chamber is keen on implementing international best management practices, environmental technologies, and social standards in the country.

"The aim is to attract investors from various nations, particularly those traditionally recognized as leaders in this field, such as Canada, Australia, and Great Britain. Therefore, it is not coincidental that the chamber's co-founders include Canadian Armenians and Lebanese Armenians, who are globally renowned specialists in metallurgy.

Currently, we are intensifying collaboration with partners from Canada, Great Britain, and the United States," Geghamyan said.

According to him, the next important element is related to the safety of the mining industry.

“The Chamber aims for our natural resources to be regarded not merely as a source of business, but as a result of a new conceptual approach they will benefit our country. In this regard, the Chamber will closely cooperate with the Armenian government to ensure that our mining resources are also viewed as a crucial element of Armenia's security architecture.

An important milestone in our activities will be the implementation of the strategy for the development of the mining sector adopted by the government. The government has also adopted an action plan, outlining the main reforms for the sector over the next ten years, providing a level of predictability for potential investors and all beneficiaries.

‘The local communities will also be at the center of attention, with whom the Chamber will collaborate through specialized committees.

The main goal is for Armenia and our people to be the primary beneficiaries of our mining resources because the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia stipulates that the subsoil and natural resources are the exclusive property of the state," said the  Executive Chairman of the International Chamber of Mines of Armenia.

Representative and  Director of the Armenian Office of the UN World Food Program Nanna Skau also attended the conference.

‘’The UN is particularly trying to cooperate with the private sector, given the fact many organizations are interested in cooperation, especially within the realm of Sustainable Development Goals program.

Such conferences contribute to understanding  how to cooperate in the context of sustainable development, environmental and social management functions.

They play a crucial role in creating a productive environment. If new technologies are used properly, if international experience is applied, companies operating in the mining industry will have more opportunities to develop mutually beneficial cooperation," concluded Nanna Skau.

Majority faction votes against putting HayaKve initiative bill on Armenia legislature agenda

News.am, Armenia
Nov 5 2023

The National Assembly (NA) of Armenia on Tuesday did not put on the agenda of its plenary session the draft law submitted by the HayaKve civil initiative, by which it is proposed to criminalize the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan.

The NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs on Monday had not approved this law proposal to make a respective addition to the Criminal Code of Armenia.

The leader of the ruling majority faction in the NA, Hayk Konjoryan, announced that the faction will vote against this bill because the aforesaid committee had voted against it. He added that this draft law will not solve any problem, but will create many other problems.

And as a result of the voting, this bill was rejected—with 26 votes in favor, 57 against and 0 abstentions—and therefore was not put on the NA agenda.

Armenia, Azerbaijan: Leaders to Intensify Border Delimitation Commission Meetings

Stratfor
Dec 1 2023

Dec 1, 2023 | 18:13 GMT

What Happened: A meeting of the commission on border delimitation and security between Armenia and Azerbaijan, chaired by the countries' respective deputy prime ministers, was held at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, Eurasianet reported on Dec. 1.

Why It Matters: Intensifying meetings in this format, and the subsequent demarcation of the border, is likely a necessary precondition to the conclusion of a peace agreement. However, border clashes remain possible even as these talks progress, and Armenia and Azerbaijan still need to resolve other disputes, most notably regarding regional transit, before a peace agreement can be finalized.

Background: This is the first time Armenia and Azerbaijan have held a meeting in this format since July, as contacts stopped following Azerbaijan's seizure of the Nagorno-Karabakh region in September. They have held five meetings since the border commissions first met in May 2022.

Yerevan has become the center of many boxing events recently. The capital of Armenia hosted the EUBC European Championships in 2022, the 2023 EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships and several IBA congresses. And now the 2023 IBA World Junior Championships are held in Mika sport complex in Yerevan.

A great opening ceremony on November 23 set the high bar for the tournament. Athletes from 51 participating nations were greeted by IBA president Umar Kremlev. “It is crucial that our grassroots boxers have the conditions to compete. Children are our future, and none of them should be left alone. I congratulate everybody on this great celebration of junior boxing! Dear athletes, I wish the strongest would win, and we will be guarantors of the fair fights. Good luck to everybody”, said Kremlev in his speech.

And today the stage was already full of exciting bouts as the preliminary rounds of 48, 52, 57 and 63 kg weight categories had begun.

The first bout of the day brought a big joy to the home crowd. 48 kg boxer from Armenia Vagharshak Keyan knocked down his rival Lee Seunghun three times in the second round and claimed the victory by technical knockout. Armenian boxers were dominant on the first day of the competition. Not only Keyan but 52 kg boxer Aren Kharatyan, 57 kg boxer Tigran Makichyan and 63 kg boxer Alik Ktshoyan won their bouts by technical knockouts. They promoted four from four to the next round of the competitions.

It was a perfect day also for Russian boxers who had two representatives in the first day of the competitions. 52 kg Maksim Chaplygin and 57 kg boxer Platon Kozlov won their preliminary bouts with great confidence.

Uzbekistan, like Armenia, had four boxers on the opening day, but only three of them advanced to the next round. Abdulaziz Abdunazoaov (48 kg), Pahlavonjon Ibrohimov (57 kg) and Khikhmatilo Ulmasov (63 kg) defeated their rivals, but 52 kg boxer Ibrokim Giyosov lost his bout to Amantur Dzhumaev from Kyrgyzstan.

Another strong performance was shown by the Irish team. Three boxers from the Republic of Ireland were in action on the first day and all of them – Christian Doyle (52 kg), Patrick Kelly (57 kg) and John Maher (63 kg) won their bouts with unanimous decisions.

Javier Martinez Derlys from Ecuador and Dzmitry Sarokin from Belarus produced one of the closest bouts of the day in the 63 kg weight category. At the end of the bout 3 judges gave the victory to the Ecuadorian and the latter won with split decision, though Sarokin didn’t agree with the judges.

Tomorrow boxers from 4 more weight categories will step to the ring and have their bouts in the preliminary round.

Urgent Message from Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem

Nov 18 2023

Source: Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem

ATTENTION ALL: The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem is under possible the greatest existential threat of its 16-century history. The existential territorial threat fully extends to all the Christian communities of Jerusalem.

The Armenian Patriarchate has recently cancelled a contract tainted with false representation, undue influence and unlawful benefits.

Instead of providing a lawful response to the cancellation, the developers attempting to build on the Cow's Garden have completely disregarded the legal posture of the Patriarchate towards this issue and instead have elected for provocation, aggression and other harrassing incendiary tactics, including destruction of property, the hiring of heavily armed provocateurs, and other instigation.

In recent days, the vast destruction and removal of asphalt on the grounds of the Armenian Quarter has been done without the presentation of permits from the municipality by the developer nor the police. Despite this, the police have chose in the last few days to demand that all members of the Armenian Community vacate the premises.

We plead with the entirety of the Christian communities of Jerusalem to stand with the Armenian Patriarchate in these unprecedented times as this is another clear step taken towards the endangerment of the Christian presence in Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
