Armenian GM Levon Aronian shared third place with Fabiano Caruana at the 2020 Champions Showdown: Chess 9LX online chess tournament after scoring 5/9 points, the Chess Federation of Armenia said.

At the end of the tournament hosted by the Saint Louis Chess Club from September 11-13, Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura both had 6/9 points and shared first place.

The tournament featured 10 leading players in the world, including Levon Aronian, Garry Kasparov, Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Hikaru Nakamura, Leinier Domínguez Pérez, Wesley So, Peter Svidler and Alireza Firouzja.

The matches were played in Chess 960 style, also known as Fischer Random, with a $150,000 prize fund.

Emil Lazarian: “I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
