At the suggestion of NA Vice President Lena Nazaryan, a monument commemorating the victims of March 1 will be erected in Yerevan.
The question of installing the monument is already on the government’s agenda. A few days ago, Lena Nazaryan presented the proposal to Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan. The proposal is on the desk of the chief architect of Yerevan.
According to Vachagan Farmanyan, the father of one of the victims, Armen Farmanyan, the installation of the monument commemorating the victims of March 1 will sober up all those who will try to keep the power by killing the citizens who came out to fight for freedom.
“We want that monument to be created and erected, so that all the young people of our Armenia feel what loss they suffered, what they suffered for, the bloodshed of the authorities ends with our sons and everything,” he told Azatutyan.
“The authorities will learn a lesson not to shoot at the people next time. It’s not that those young people just wanted freedom, they fought for freedom,” added Sargis Kloyan, the father of another victim, Gori Kloyan.
The parents wanted it to be ready for the 11th anniversary of the March 1 crime, but the municipality considers it impossible. There are many issues to be discussed, it will take months.
The relatives of the victims suggested that the monument should be placed in the section of Grigor Lusavorich Street, near the City Hall, because the main events took place here. On the anniversary of March 1, oppositionists and citizens laid flowers near Myasnikyan’s statue.
Weeks ago, the Armenian National Congress also called for the installation of a monument commemorating the ten victims of March 1. He proposed to define March 1st as a “day of commemoration of the victims of March 1st, 2008 and nationwide protest against state terrorism and repression”, to organize mass public events dedicated to the day of remembrance.
